It may, or may not, be an accurate indicator.

But the test I propose IS an accurate indicator, since it DIRECTLY tests what is of interest, namely the ability to perform without glitches.

Mike, I do not understand why you don't think for real time, cpu use is
not an accurate indicator. For my purposes using an actual complicated
and large gigging setup, I think it is the most important indicator.

For club gigs I have:

- my worst case latency I can live with for real time, -b128 -B512
- my total channels, always 6-8 ( kick, bass, and more stereo pairs )
- my worst ksmps I can live with, 64
- my worst case sr I can with, 441000

After that, the actual code and musical limitations are written around
the limitations of my cpu. So if I can get 69% instead of 82% when I am
only using 5 synths, 8 drum channels, and 2 reverbs, it means I can add
more gear, which I would like. On the other hand, 82% is about where I
top it out.

However, I will do other tests too.

Steven, could you also if possible do a realtime output cpu use
comparison? I would be interested to hear the difference.

Thanks
Iain

No, this is not true, it definitely *is* an accurate indicator for me
and the way I am using csound, because cpu use is my limiting factor. I
want to add two more fm synths and another long high quality reverb. At
my gig settings I can do this with 32 bit, and not with 64. I will be
really disappointed if 32 bit is discontinued. So how can this not be a
valid comparison? It may not matter to how *you* work, but it matters a
great deal to how I work. My ensembles are designed from the ground up
to hold a steady cpu use for live use, and they both held within one
percent at 69 and 82, a 13% increase. Over 90% cpu and I run the risk of
breakup when there are spikes in cpu use. ( This I have tested a great
deal ). I already know what ksmp I want to use and what buffer rates I
need, I add more voices according to my resources.
