A few weeks back, we heard in the Cs-Dev list from someone
working
on a csound~ using the Csound5 API. Forgot his name.

Hi,

I'm working on a csound5 external for Max for Mac OSX. It's not a strict port
of csoundapi~ or Matt Ingalls' csound~ object, but it does share features of both.
I'm currently looking for a hosting service (comparing costs and features) and
hope to have a web site up and running soon. The external itself seems to be
working fine on my machine, but it hasn't been run on any1 else's computer yet.

No you can't. CsoundVST does not build on OSX and is not
available for that plaftorm. I'm afraid you'll have to wait for
csound~ (or move to PD and support Free Software! :) )

Oh, Max on a PC. I'm sorry I thought you were on
a Mac...

I haven't used CsoundVST for some time now and I don't know what new features
are in the Csound5 version. But with an external, you can:

-> communicate with csound by passing score line events directly to the external

-> send/receive k-rate values to/from csound via the invalue/outvalue opcodes
   without having to scale

-> control csound performance (start/stop/rewind) with messages

-> forget about vst~ (yay!). Though, it's possible to put the external inside
a Pluggo plugin (I think) if you wanted to use the external in another host
   program.

If those features aren't important to you, then there's no real advantage to
using a csound external over CsoundVST.

Do you prefer Max on PC to using PD with the csoundapi object? I have
not heard good things about the MAX pc implementation, but perhaps that
has changed recently.
