Unless you know that you're only ever going to work on OS X, I think
it's worth getting used to one of the cross-platform editors e.g. emacs,
vim. The learning curve will be worth it if you need to work on a
different platform -- i.e. you won't need to learn a new editor.

I use vim with Luis Jure's excellent vim tools:

http://www.eumus.edu.uy/docentes/jure/csound/vim/

In the long run it saves a lot of time.

Hi Oeyvind -

if you like to use a cross-platform editor, you can also use jEdit.
Jacob Joaquin wrote an extension for syntax highlighting (http://
www.thumbuki.com/csound/jedit/) and with the macro in the attachment
you can run the .csd you are working on.

The main deficit in my opinion is that there is no direct link to the
manual. Perhaps in future ...

hey oeyvind!

Well i am freak'n busy with music and fulltime dayjob and admit i haven't released a public update for a while :) so there might be some new opcodes that do not come up in the syntax help, but it does work! -- i just performed with MacCsound (on an Intel MacBook) last week on the San Francisco Electronic Music Festival.

But there are a few "issues" i need to resolve before i go on with any further substantial development -- especially wrt the text editor!
i would be curious to hear from you and for those that are using other editors on mac how they think of those compare to MacCsound's editor -- if there is no need/desire for MacCsound's editor it would be nice for me to know!

thanks,
m

Hi Matt,

I was forced to change to Smultron but I would love to have MacCsound again on the lntel. The text editor on MacCsound is really good and if you could add the cross-platform compatibility for the GUI it would be fantastic! Also for pedagogical purposes is MacCsound very nice. I missed it this year when teaching csound.

Cheers,

Luis

i completely agree with luis: i miss mac csound too, especially in

I love MacCsound and haven't gotten used to anything else. Every time
I try something new, I get frustrated with it and go back to
MacCsound. I wish it had an Open Recent menu, but that's about it
right now. Haven't found anything out there that compares from an
overall IDE perspective.

I use both Jedit and the MacCsound editor a great deal. In MacCsound, the syntax hints at the bottom of the screen are very useful, more useful than those editors that simply color the syntax. Also the ability to jump directly to each instrument is excellent and very much appreciated. My live-performance orchestra is very large and I really appreciate the ability to find each instrument so easily.

Beyond the editor itself, it’s so easy to invoke Csound itself, that I would now have to reread the manual to remember how to do it from the command line interface.

However there are a few features in the editor that could stand improvement:

When pasting text, an unwanted space, which was not part of the original “copy” is inserted. This often slows me down and is the main reason I sometimes use JEdit.

Search and replace is awkward compared to other editors.

But for me MacCsound is still the best show in town. I do fear the day that I switch to an Intel Mac, but I’m relieved to hear from Matt that MacCsound runs on Intel Macs.

Hi Matt,

I used to use MacCsound, but eventually switched because it is unstable
on Intel Mac. Running the PPC version, I found there were times it would
crash on me every two minutes, which really gets in the way of work
flow! If it weren't for that, I would definitely still be using it.
