Ubuntu is approximatelt Debian.  There is a Debian package around, for 
example in http://www.cs.bath.ac.uk/jpff/Csound5/debian/

Yes, I've installed from source in Ubuntu 7.10.. 
very little linux background but figured it out eventually.

The debian installer package does not work.  You will need to compile it
from source... if you run into some troubles get back to me, and I will
try to dig out my old emails and give you a step by step.
