I'd recommend using the binary installer before going any further.

While I wouldn't recommend building the code yourself, it worked for me. I've 
never got the Csound5 Linux installer to work properly for me, but I might 
just be doing something unusual. I had to change the installer's default 
paths and probably got wrong!

So I compiled it from source and installed it on my Ubuntu 7.10 machine. This 
probably won't be so easy for a Linux beginner, but the build instructions 
are easy to follow and should work for you. I had to install a few library 
development packages to get all the features I wanted.
