Hi Istvan,
I'm sorry to hear this, it would certainly be better to not duplicate
efforts on development, especially since csound doesn't really have that
many developers.
I think this is yet again a case of lack of communication. I have just
seen the cvs log for the Engine/envvar.c, and the fact that none of this
has been **properly** discussed on the lists shows, that the problem
went on unnoticed and undiscussed, and it just turned into a personal
issue.

I know you are very receptive to comments and suggestions if they are
explained and well argumented, and I'm sure john is as well. The MFDIR
issue is really a trivial one that should be discussed publicly and
maybe voted on by the community, since it seems to me to be only an
issue of personal taste, not a particularly significant issue.

When people tamper with your code it can be annoying, I know because you
have tampered with some of mine, but maybe this can be communicated, to
avoid these situations. For instance, why not share the script you are
using for indentation, that way you avoid offending a developer because
you changed the spacings within a comment. Why not make a clear
explanation (on the list- not just the cvs comment, as sometimes you
don't see that) for certain changes that might seem arbitrary to the
original author?

I know passions rage high for this software we care so passionately
about, and into which we have poured many hours of work, but I
personally feel that the when issues like these come up, one should
think of what's best for the software. What that is in this case, I'm
not sure...

This also leaves me in a problem... For which version should I maintain
the manual? I'm already very short with time maintaining one version...

Anyway, this message is written to ask you to reconsider your decision,
and to ask both you and john to try (for the good of csound) to leave
personal differences aside and try to work jointly, communicating,
discussing, *****argumenting***** any changes that need to be made. And
to remember that sometimes it just comes to personal preference, without
much impact, and in these cases there's really no need to take a 'do or
die' stand.

Cheers,
Andres

Andres,

You should maintain the *Public Canonical Csound5* version of the
manual as supervised
by John ffitch - and not any of the forked versions.

John ffitch is in charge of the Csound5 Developers. For many years
now, he has
assumed the main responsibility of maintaining and supervising the
public version
of Csound. This honor and distinction was given to him by the
author of Csound -
Barry Vercoe. Barry speaks of this fact in every public lecture that
he gives.
In fact, Barry and John are still collaborating on new Csound
projects - to this day.

MFDIR - was a request made by me on behalf of Barry Vercoe. After a
brief discussion,
Barry suggested that it should be added to public Csound. Clearly,
this is something
that Barry could have easily added and changed and, in fact,
something he did add
and change in his private version of Csound. By making this change a
standard part of
public Csound, John was acting on Barry Vercoe's wishes. But...
Istvan, didn't think this
was a good idea. Maybe Istvan doesn't like the sound of FM synthesis
and might remove
these opcode? Given something so trivial, it is shocking to me and
incredibly immature
and presumptuous. Who is Istvan Varga, to make the sole decisions
regarding what
the Csound users or developers need?

I wish Istvan much success with his private version of Csound5.

But I also, especially wish to say thank you to John ffitch for
making these changes.
And thank you to you Andres, for all your work on the current
manual. I printed out a
copy for Barry Vercoe last week and he was very impressed!

Dr. B.
