I do have a Debian machine in the mix but I am not up to any speed on
Debian packages (or indeed rpm).  I tried to follow the instructions I
found but they do not make much sense to be.  I keep finding missing
commands.
  Is there anyone who understands this stuff?

Strange as it compiled as me a few minutes ago.

I do not know what the .config files say as the script deletes them after 
failing!

I suspect that it is to do with not having . in the $PATH as is usual when 
running as root.  Slightly harder as I am running in bash which i do not 
use except under duress.

Since when FFTW is a dependency? I thouhgt csound used its own
code as provided by Istvan?
