Subject[Csnd] Problems with Csound
Hello everyone!

I submit this problem.
My operating system is macOS 10.14.3 Mojave installed on a 13" retina MacBook Pro.

Since last night after having worked an hour, I can not open Csound through CsoundQt-d-py-cs6.
Instead, the version of Csound I installed is: https://github.com/csound/csound/releases/download/6.12.2/Csound6.12.1-MacOS_universal.dmg

After double clicking on CsoundQt-d-py-cs6 the frontend logo appears, but the program never opens ... not even after a long wait.

Some idea?
Thanks…
Enrico

SubjectRe: [Csnd] Problems with Csound
Hi,

People have reported similar problem on Mojave and just yesterday I uploaded a
new build:

https://github.com/CsoundQt/CsoundQt/releases/download/0.9.6-beta3/
CsoundQt-0.9.6-beta3-6-MacOS.dmg

Seems that the problem might be caused from the settings file. Please can you
send me you ~/Library/Preferences/com.csound.qutecsound.plist ? And after that
for any case rename or remove it.

And please report back if this version works.

If I remember correctly the path...
You can use either Finder , I think there is somewhere in the meny Go to
Folder... where you can enter it
OR
use terminal
cd ~/Library/Preferences/

I am not by a Mac, cannot check right now.

I'm downloading:

but I ask a question:
using the beta version it is always necessary to rename or remove the file ~
/ Library / Preferences / com.csound.qutecsound.plist ?

No, no, and probably not at all. I am just suspecting that this might be the
problem of crash. This is the only way to examine tha problem, if people send
me the corrupted settings file to have a look at. And maybe this was not the
reason overall.

Tarmo,

I managed to open the beta version and play some csd;
unfortunately, however, I still have not managed to get the mic signal in

ain inch 1

even after taking the precaution to insert in the header:
nchnls_i = 1
as Victor Lazzarini suggested to me, to avoid mistakes ...

some idea?

Ok, good, I am glad to hear that CsoundQt works now!

I suggest you to try different audio modules (portaudio, coreaudio) and maybe
different sound devices CsoundQt->Configuration->RtAudio module.

You can use Examples->Useful->IO test to test the input.

And I can confirm input audio in CsoundQT 0.9.6 does not work,
but CsoundQT 0.9.5 (previous version) does work!

So, for now, Enrico, you can try using 0.9.5

This makes sense.

CsoundQt 0.9.5 was built on MacOs 10.12 with its somewhat older build tool-chain that did not include the "privacy protection" of using microphone. Unfortunately several Mojave users have reported that this build does not work on Mojave so I did the 0.9.6-beta3  builds on mojave with updated Xtools that seems to cause the issue.

Unfortunately I am doing Mac development on a virtual machine that has no audio emulation so it is hard to test. But I will look for more info whether something can be done. Thanks for letting know!

*Unfortunately I thought I had solved my problem, but it is not.*

CsoundQt 9.5 after a few minutes of working on the csd (in which I use the
microphone signal recalled with /inch 1/ that now goes out), and after
closing it, CsoundQt has stopped working as it should:
- after closing the frontend and reopening it after a few minutes, the
program is struggling to reopen ... it reopens only after many minutes ...
allowing me to work only on the first csd;
- once you still open problems: you can not create a new csd, or open
another by calling it from File> Open ... the frontend no longer responds
and you are forced to a Forced closure ...
- it is not even possible to open the Tutorials made available in the
frontend: even in this case you are forced to a Forced Closure ...
- I also tried with CsoundQt 9.4
   but the
difficulties remain the same ...

I do not know…
Maybe it's the version of Csound 6.12 that annoys Mojave?

No, it's not Csound. Csound works fine in the command line. It's an issue with CsoundQT, although here I have Mojave and
0.9.5 works fine.

just a thought: you (enrico) reported a warning from csound about not
being able to load something related to jack.. perhaps it would be worth
to try installing jack and see if you can work with jack as real time
audio module (Configure > Run > RT Audio Module). you can install jack
for osx from here: http://jackaudio.org/downloads/

another idea: can you use an external sound card rather than internal mic?

Hi,

I arrived back by the computer. So far I believe a google search "Where are my prefernece files Mac" would have helped you quicker :)

But here:

Open Finder ->  Go -> Go to Folder, enter ~/Library/Preferences
and look for com.csound.qutecsound.plist

move it away to  Desktop or somewhere (if CsounQt starts, this might give information about the problem, please send the file to me).

Hi,

Yes, this file seems corrupted - but no idea yet why...

Meanwhile - we managed to solve the micrhophone problem with Victor and
0.9.6-beta3 asks for permission to use mike. A small test build:
http://tarmo.uuu.ee/varia/failid/cs/CsoundQt/CsoundQt-beta3-8.zip
It does not include PythonQt, HTML nor extended examples.

I will do a new full build and upload to Github release page today later.

CsoundQt-0.9.6beta3-7-MacOS.dmg

Hope it worksm there are many things that can go wrong in packaging...

First time when you start it, it should ask for permission to use microphone.

Yes! It takes a noticeably longer time now for Csound to begin "csounding". I am hoping that the "load and run" time can be sped up to what it used to be. Almost instantaneous. You used to hit run and it ran! Tarmo? Any thoughts?

SubjectRe: [Csnd] Problems with Csound
i just tested and there are problems in using portaudio (probably not a
csoundqt issue). portaudio callback and portaudio blocking behave
different, but none is really good.

i strongly recommend to use jack:
1) download and install
https://github.com/jackaudio/jackaudio.github.com/releases/download/1.9.11/JackOSX.0.92_b3.zip
2) start the Jack Pilot.
3) select jack in csoundqt's Configure > General > RT audio Module.

for my then everything ran smoothly. it is even possible to run csound
via jack, and max via coreaudio without stopping jack.

Same here -- I have some generative pieces that I run on a Raspberry Pi (which I run headless), and the audio always begins right away.

Hi,

In fact I forgot about it... The other problem is that I am not using Mac and don't have good means to test it. Still, I keep thinking about it. So far:

did Joachims suggestion to use jack give any result? Is the problem only on Render or you mean Run in CsoundQt? I guess when you start with Run in Term then it is OK?

Thanks,
tarmo

SubjectRe: [Csnd] Problems with Csound
Hi Tarmo,

I state that for the tests I am doing, on the problem of delayed execution,
I am using a MacBook Pro with macOs Mojave 10.14.4.

The problem with CsoundQt-d-py-html-cs6 occurs:
- when I use "Run" (or "Avvia") execution
- when I use the "Run in Term" (or "Avvia in Term") execution

I didn't try with Jack, but Joachim had already written above that by
activating Jack the problem seems to be solved.
