Subject[Csnd] [OT] Csound Music Additive Synthesis
https://soundcloud.com/antunespena/etuede-in-granit

Some years ago I programmed an instrument in csound to better understand the additive synthesis. The instrument works live with 32 sine waves each one of them is individually controlled in amplitude and frequency deviation from a base frequency. This is a recording of an improvisation with this instrument. If someone is interested I'll post the csd file. Hope you enjoy.
Best,
Luís

Luis, I am fascinated by this piece, and would very much like to see your .csd. Particularly I'd like to explore your control mechanisms for the 32 waves.

I like the way your textures ebb and flow and transform. My favorite portions of the piece are the beginning and the end, as well as where you transition into noisy sonorities. Fine work.

First of all: the composition was made 100% with csound so the [OT] is wrong.

Second: to post a work composed fully with csound is useless without the .csd file. So please post it. Thanks in advance.

Could you please stop claiming that posting a piece is useless without it's .csd? I think it's quite rude and not very inviting for new or infrequent users of the this list.

Of course it's interesting to see how it was made, but this mesmerising piece of music was far from useless without seeing the code. If you can't get anything out of listening to the piece without watching the code, then it's your problem. You can ask for it nicely (as others have) instead of demanding it like it's in the csound lists policy that you shouldn't post music without accompinying code.

He did it to me on a posting that did include the .csd, apparently by
reflex without having read the posting. That sure didn't make me feel he
was interested in my music as anything but an excuse to push his own
agenda, and in fact (though this would be unfortunate for innocent
bystanders) I seriously considered responding with "The .csd was posted,
but since you clearly didn't care enough to notice that before making your
demand, I've taken it down."

I see it as legitimate to request a .csd for a piece of music if one has a
specific interest in it for oneself - after listening to the piece and
reading any notes that come with it. But I also think it's legitimate for
an artist to choose not to share the source code when sharing the music;
"no" is a reasonable answer to such a request. And I think it's
inappropriate to agitate for a policy of "all music made with Csound must
also come with shared source code" on behalf of non-specific third parties
when one isn't actually reading that source code oneself.

Consider "stage magic is useless without an explanation of how it's done"
- or many other art forms. With very much of music it's not possible to
share anything in the nature of source code even in principle. Scores
don't always exist and when they do they aren't enough to recreate
performances. The fact that "source code" exists at all with Csound,
shouldn't equate to a requirement or expectation that it will always be
shared. And what about Csound-generated music for which the artist owns
the .csd and the audio output but can't legally share required sample
libraries for others to run that source code, because of having
commercially licensed the samples - as is the case with some of my own
music? (for example, http://audio.northcoastsynthesis.com/index.php?t=whose_is_the_world )

It's not the lack of precision in your message, it's the message itself. This is a community, so it's not up to you alone to define what matters most this mailing list - people are on this list for a variety of reasons, not only to look at .csd's. Hi,

I agree with Bernt completely that being supportive and polite is the unwritten code keeping up this list and the community. Pablo, your passionate interest to Csound is also very encourageing but indeed, your word vhoice may trigger negative feelings. Let's try to avoid such very little Csound related discussions in the future...

And thanks and congratulations, Luis!

Thanks for all your nice messages. I'm glad you liked and I hope this can help other csounders making music.

I post here the version of the last performance I gave with this instrument with four channels. You'll need a midi controller to hear anything. These are the parameters I worked with and the midi mapping :

;---------------------------------    init midi ctrl
ctrlinit 1, 7, 0    ;global amp
ctrlinit 1, 10, 64    ;amp single oscil
ctrlinit 1, 12, 20    ;pitch [Hz]
ctrlinit 1, 13, 127    ;freq tremolo
ctrlinit 2, 13, 2    ;amp tremolo
ctrlinit 2, 7, 0    ;factor LF
ctrlinit 2, 10, 0    ;random freq
ctrlinit 3, 7, 0    ;factor HF
ctrlinit 3, 10, 0    ;factor freq HF
ctrlinit 4, 7, 2    ;random amp
ctrlinit 5, 7, 30    ;spectral amp weight
ctrlinit 8, 7, 32    ;rev amp
;---------------------------------    init midi ctrl

Best,

Just to say my wife and I are appreciating the "Whose is the world?" piece, with or without the csd level.  Thanks

Thank you, Luis! I can't wait to try out this code. Additive synthesis has fascinated me a lot recently and this might help to spur me in the right direction to explore it futher. And Csound is the perfect app for doing it (in part considering how resource-intensive additive synthesis seems to be).

Thanks again!

I post here the version of the last performance I gave with this instrument with four channels. You'll need a midi controller to hear anything. These are the parameters I worked with and the midi mapping :

;---------------------------------    init midi ctrl
ctrlinit 1, 7, 0    ;global amp
ctrlinit 1, 10, 64    ;amp single oscil
ctrlinit 1, 12, 20    ;pitch [Hz]
ctrlinit 1, 13, 127    ;freq tremolo
ctrlinit 2, 13, 2    ;amp tremolo
ctrlinit 2, 7, 0    ;factor LF
ctrlinit 2, 10, 0    ;random freq
ctrlinit 3, 7, 0    ;factor HF
ctrlinit 3, 10, 0    ;factor freq HF
ctrlinit 4, 7, 2    ;random amp
ctrlinit 5, 7, 30    ;spectral amp weight
ctrlinit 8, 7, 32    ;rev amp
;---------------------------------    init midi ctrl

Some years ago I programmed an instrument in csound to better understand the additive synthesis. The instrument works live with 32 sine waves each one of them is individually controlled in amplitude and frequency deviation from a base frequency. This is a recording of an improvisation with this instrument. If someone is interested I'll post the csd file. Hope you enjoy.
