I have no idea.  There are two possibilities:

1: The checking to see if the interface needs attention is way too slow
2: The interface si too slow

and I suppose, 
3: I failed to optimise teh compilation.

It was not always thus!  Checking the benchmarks show that the cost
was low.

Have you tried using winsound in commandline form?
