SubjectOfftopic: sound compression
Hello!

Sorry for this offtopic posting, but this list is read by so many people
with a wide intellectual horizon, that I think, at least, it is worth a
try.

So I'm looking for sound compression tool that knows the following:
- implemented on unix,
- compression ratio about 1:4,
- can be used in realtime (say on an average PC at about 100MHz),
- sound quality is not most important, as I want to use it at low sampling
rates (<= 11025).

I only know two programs now: both are using losing algorythm and they
are the two extremes, I'd like a solution between the two. One is
`shorten', which can compress at the ratio 1:2 with minimal cpu load
resulting no hearable distortion. The other is using the well-known mpeg
compression method and it is called `l3enc'. As you know, it is the
opposite of shorten, as it can compress 1:5 ... 1:15 but it is very
cpu-eater.
A suitable program for me should know a bit better compression than
shorten, but not demand so much computing. Or do I want too much?
Perhaps a quicker and not so good-quality mp3 coder? Or something
completely else? Please, help me!

Thanks in advance,
Csaba
