Re my previous message, I seem to have solved the problem. 

I was playing back the WAV files using Cool Edit; if I play them back using
Media Player then all the noise is gone (Hallelujah!!). Maybe there is a
compatibility problem between Cool Edit and Windows 95? Anyway, now I can
get on with some serious CSounding. Thanks for for all your help.
