Powermac 3.47 Version

SubjectPowermac 3.47 Version
Hi CSounders,

I'm a pretty new CSound user and I'm looking for the new 3.47 version on
PowerMac.

I've been on the following site:
ftp://ftp.maths.bath.ac.uk/pub/dream/platforms/mac/PCCsound.hqx

but none of the files here are specificaly labeled PPC 3.47.
More, in each different file category there is .hqx and .Hqx suffix.
What is the difference.
Last but not least: each time I tried to load a file, the link died
after 30 minutes. Stream seems very slow. I guess it's crowded.
Is there anywhere a mirror site?

Thank you for your help.

I have tidied up that directory. There is now only one file, and it
is version 3.471.

On the other hand, when the Mills version comes it will be better!

In danger of stating the obvious, but the Extended Csound card for
Analog Devices has 6 outputs, both digital and analog. All I need now
is a quad/sextet amplifier and 4 more speakers

I'm working on it. Has the '+' bug really crept back in? I'll give an
ETA of middle of next week (we are just starting a new semester here).
I am planning on putting the code out at the same time.

.......is it OK to peep out now?

First let me say how touched I was by all those nice messages; it
cheered me up a great deal to feel that it is worthwhile. On the
other hand as Jean and Larry noticed it was rather embarassing, and I
have been somewhat afraid to intrude.

I do think however that will we are in a congratulatory mood there are
others who have not got anything like the credit they deserve for
3.47. I am not going to start another round of "thank you"s I hope,
but there are a number of other names who had a strong influence,
apart from the obvious ones like Jean, Dave and Gabrielle. I am also
not going to list them all, as they should know who they are, and they
are mainly regular posters to this list. Bug reports, defficiency
reports and so on are the life-blood of this development. Ideas for
ways to improve things are always welcome, even if not always acted
on! If I tried to list everyone I know I would miss someone.

I do however what to place on record my thanks to two people; firstly
Barry Vercoe, who gave me a bundle of code and fixes -- I suspect that
people do not realise how much Barry still does on Csound for us all.
The other person I wish to embarass is Richard Boulanger. He is
responsible for the Perry Cook opcodes in Csound. He bullied me into
doing it despite me saying that it would take months (it actually took
less than I said), and discussed it with Perry. He arranged other
opcodes from various people, kicked me to fix various things, and has
worked day and night (litterally at times for those of you who know
him!) on getting this version out. Thanks for all the work you made
me do! And I have not forgotten the other things I said I could do
and have not yet......

So, having said that, now is the time to look forward to what needs to
be done, and to using it.

Get an SGI. I can't remember if the new O2s have four channel output but
the indigos come standard with four channel output. A friend of mine at
Apple said it might be possible to get another card for additional
outputs, but I have never researched this possibility. We have been
using quad sound on our indigo2 for some time now, experimenting with 3-d
sound and we have been very happy with the results.

well its easy enough to do a second pass in CSound to split up the quad
file. i'm more interested in getting CSound (i guess im thinking on a mac
here) to playback in 4 channels through some hardware.

too bad noone makes free hardware...

> As I see it, these are the basic technical issues:

1: The channels nust be byte-synchronous

This depends for example on pairs of soundcards running from a common
clock; I gather that this is the case for many of the mew multi-channel
cards now available. I have access to a Terratec EWS-XL, and have been
told that this can indeed be used to play back 4 channels, from a
possible internal 32.

2: on the PC (Win95), a generic wave driver is needed which can
identify 4-ch hardware, so that even a Noddy program like Media Player
can play a 4 channel file.

As an interim step, when I get the chance, I will see if I can get four
channels into the Terratec using the Windows Wave API's (eg by opening
two stereo devices); if so, it should be straight-forward to add that to
Csound.

And, as John Fitch pointed out, on the SHARC card all this should be a
doddle!

If any manufacturers (Emagic?) are listening, and would like to send me
some cards to experiment with, I will be very grateful, and this list
will be the first to know.

I am trying to raise a number to a power within Csound, (say 2 to
the power of .04) and as far as I can tell there is no quick arithmetical
operator to do this. The only operator I can find is exp(). Does anybody
have a quick fudge for doing this?

exp(0.04*log(2)) will do it. e.g. x^y = exp(y*log(x))

CUBASE VST for example can use simultaneously the 2 analog outs and the 2

Same for the ins.
So it's possible to do it on an AM III. It's just a software problem and to
get an additional DAC of course(any DAT with SPDIF ins).
It would be interesting to know if someone has an idea about the realisation
of this.

Emagic products are discussed on the following mailing list:

logic-users@mcc.ac.uk

The Audiowerke 8 (AW8) from Emagic, the 1212 from Korg and other cards
all have 8 or more analogue outs.

The problem with the AW8 (which I own) and maybe the others is that the
Windows multimedia driver only allows you to use one stereo output. I
believe I have heard that this may be slated for change in the future,
but I don't know for sure.

These cards are PCI bus cards and therefore are OK on Macs and PC's. I
don't know whether you can use all of the outputs easily on a Mac or
not.

As for adding support to Csound, from the Emagic web site:

http://www.emagic.de/english/news/index.html

"Emagic now makes a comprehensive
 Audiowerk8 Development Kit available to
 all commercial software manufacturers. The
kit includes all the information that is
required for 3rd party developers to access
the entire functionality of Audiowerk8 from
 within their own software."

"3rd Party Developers who would like to
order the Audiowerk8 Development Kit or
 obtain more information about the
 Audiowerk8 support program can send
their enquiries directly to Emagic by email:
 aw8sdk@emagic.de"

I don't know what it costs, but maybe a university could fund one of the
Csound developers for this and similar SDK's?

Cheers

Mike Thomas.

I have no problem playing quad sound using my AudioWerk8 on Win95. All =
I have to do is split the quad file into 4 mono files then I can use the =
VMR program which comes with the card to play them back simultaneously. =
However it is a little annoying not to be able to just play a quad file =
straight up.

As has been mentioned, the multimedia driver for the AW8 is only stereo =
at this time, but on top of that I have not seen a standard multimedia =
program that supports playback of quad sound files anyway. Also, real =
time support for quad audio from within Csound would be nice, but I =
think that is a matter of having a quad sound driver and not a matter of =
altering Csound.

On a Mac, the issue is having access to the direct driver for the sound card,
such as the Digidesign Audio Engine in the case of a Digi card. There is no
way to go through the general Sound Manager and do anything beyond mono and stereo.
For Digi, this involves having the SDK which involves signing
contracts and such, as well as coming up with a ProTools system. Were these
two available to me, I would be happy + interested to do the actual coding
necessary. So if anyone can provide them, let me know.

WCShell, a command console & utility programs for Csound, is (at least)
on the web.
You can download it from the URL
http://www.axnet.it/edison/wcshell.zip

This file contains the installation, so unzip it in a temporary
directory (sorry, now it's called 'folder'), an run SETUP.EXE from
there.

By the way, thanks to Ffitch, Maldonado and all other people working to
give us all better versions of Csound.

You could use another audio-card such as AudioWerks
- stereo analog I/O
- stereo digital I/O (S/PDif)
- 8 analog outputs

Its really good.

I think it should not too difficoult to implement the way of opening
two stereo soundcards in parallel and manage them to achieve realtime
quadraphony in Csound. Maybe this is one of the things-to-do in some
future release of my win95 realtime Csound.

I've implemented the 'powoftwo()' function: it is fast because is
derived from cpsoct() which uses table indexing with integer arithmetic,
and will be avalaible with the next release of my win95 realtime csound
(within a couple of weeks).

I'm working on it. Has the '+' bug really crept back in? I'll give an
ETA of middle of next week (we are just starting a new semester here).
I am planning on putting the code out at the same time.
