Subject[Csnd] Raspberry 4+ Csound - WOW !!! need apt-get Cabbage, apt-get Blue, Cecilia6!
Hello Everyone,

I can't begin to tell you how excited I am about running Csound on the new Raspberry Pi 4+
- the performance is great. (much much better than a 3+)
- it is running CsoundQt (beautifully)
AND
- I just plug in a USB MIDI Keyboard and it plays and maps MIDI perfectly to CSD and CsoundQt instruments!
AND
- Audio sounds pretty great out of the built-in output
BUT
- I am just plugging in a Behringer USB Audio Interface (and it just works and works great)
or
- I am just plugging in a Behringer USB Audio Mixer with a TRS MIC preamp (and it just works and works great)
- transferring over all my .csds via the chromium web browser (part of the raspian OS)

I have some audio cards and will explore more of this later, but I am very happy with these USB solutions for now!

Setting up the board is super simple and super fast. (sudo apt-get install xxx - wow!!!)

And Audacity and Cecilia5 and PD and Paulstretch and Ardour all install simply and run too!
- especially thrilled about Audacity.

It's this simple:

sudo apt-get install csound
sudo apt-get install csoundqt
sudo apt-get install audacity
sudo apt-get install paulstretch
sudo apt-get install ardour
sudo apt-get install cecilia (wish it was Cecilia 4!)

BUT...  what is missing is:

sudo apt-get install cabbage
sudo apt-get install blue

AND... a new Cecilia that has Csound inside again!

Rory - can you put things together with Cabbage so that one can install it on the Pi4 without having to build from sources?

Steven - can you put things together with Blue so that one can install it on the Pi4 without having to build it from sources?

Olivier - any chance we will see a Cecilia6 that has Csound6 inside?

Why am I so excited, well, I intend to have all 200 Electronic Production and Design Majors build little Csound Fuzz Boxes and FX Processors and Synths on the Pi - this semester and every semester AND when I am in China from October 11-28, I will be building Csound synths with all my students over there too.

I am sure that you all knew this already - but... can't wait to discuss further at the conference.

Could this be a tipping point?  I think so.

-dB

PS.  Steven - I forgot to try running live.csound on it from Chromium Browser but I will do that later today.

Rory,

You are the best!

I can't help it that your stuff is so great!!!

My students (and I) are in total "wow" every time I show them and use it.

Already one 491 Thesis was done based on your Cabbage!!! She now works at Apple!!! And this semester, another student is building plugins around your system.  Wish you were going to be at ICSC so that we could hang out and I could buy you an ice cream!

Thanks so much.

Hi,

I just made a few changes to Cecilia4Csound and it now runs fine on my Debian computer with python 2.7 [1] and csound 6.12. Today I asked one of the Debian Multimedia Maintainers to add cecilia4Csound to debian packages and he kindly accepted. I'll take a few weeks to test a little bit deeper and give him the green light to build the package.

I'll let you know how it goes!

Olivier

[1] Python 2.7 support will be dropped in January 2020. It's time to switch to python3 only. It would be nice to have a python3-csound package in debian. That would allow me to switch cecilia4Csound to python3/wxPython Phoenix instead of python2/wxPython Classic...!

For Python3, you could migrate to ctcsound. In fact you should migrate anyway if you're planning to keep Cecilia4Csound going, as we will eventually drop the SWIG bindings

Not sure how this is packaged in the distros, but it's a single .py file. François Pinot is the
author, he may offer assistance.

I highly recommend it.

Wow!!!! Olivier... this is awesome news!!!!
We all love (and use) Cecilia4 and Cecilia5 at Berklee and all over the world.  This is great news about the new Cecilia4Csound with the latest Csound.  Can't wait!  Will you make a Macintosh build available on your site?  Hope so.  It is a core tech tool in both my Csound and my DSP classes every semester and... I will be teaching with it in China too.
October 11-28.

This is super great news.

Pyo 0.8.8 is too old, I just updated cecilia4Csound to work with pyo 1.0.0. You can install it with pip:

sudo pip install -U pyo

Funny that you mention "locked up in the Janitor's closet". I do have to admit that this was in a box (un-opened) in the back of a cabinet in my studio for the past two years.
I took it out and set it up last week with (Csound and Audacity and Cabbage and Blue and Cecilia and Cubase) to take along with me to China in October. Many of the students there are using Windows.  Still testing.... and installing.

SubjectRe: [Csnd] Raspberry 4+ Csound - WOW !!! need apt-get Cabbage, apt-get Blue, Cecilia6!
Hi Richard,

Here is how I just got Cecilia4Csound running on my MacOS 10.13 and Windows 10 computers. I'll try to find some time this semester to fix and update things (mostly porting to python 3 and wxPython phoenix) and build standalone versions for both OSes.

Olivier

On MacOS:

1) Install python 2.7 from python.org
2) Install csound 6.13
Copy files :
    /Library/Frameworks/CsoundLib64.framework/Versions/6.0/Resources/Python/Current/_csnd6.so
    /Library/Frameworks/CsoundLib64.framework/Versions/6.0/Resources/Python/Current/csnd6.py
To:
    /Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.7/lib/python2.7/site-packages
In a terminal:
4) sudo python -m pip install pyo wxPython numpy
6) cd cecilia4csound
7) python Cecilia4Csound.py

Windows 10:

1) Install python 2.7 64-bit from python.org
2) Install csound 6.13
3) Install wxpython 3.0.2.0 for python2.7 from sourceforge.net
In a Command Prompt:
4) py -2.7 -m pip install pyo numpy
6) cd cecilia4csound
7) py -2.7 Cecilia4Csound.py
