SubjectRe: Panning
Are you sure that you are not send a signal that is too large to
your pan control, which chops it down to an acceptable level except on the
boundaries? The pan algorithm you are using will tend to leave a "hole in
the middle." The percieved overall loudness will be considerably less
when you are panned in a center position than at the edges.
A standard method is to use one quadrant of a sine wave as the
curve for the pan. Make this f table:

f# 0 1025 9 .25 1 ;The frist quadrant of a sine

then make your orchestra:

ibalance = p6 / 100 * 1024
ipanl tablei ibalance, #
ipanr tablei 1024 - ibalance, #
outs asig * ipanl, asig * ipanr

And check the edges for clipping.

Hello Csounders

I was trying to analyse an Aiff file using pvanal, however none of the versions
of Csound I am using wants to do it ! I tried with both the latest
release and an
older one (mac).

All I get is this

util PVANAL:
break3.aif: AIFF, 58876 samples, baseFrq 261.6 (midi 60), gain 0 db, sustnLp: mo
de 0, relesLp: mode 0
audio sr = 30000, monaural
analyzing 58876 sample frames (2.0 secs)
1024 infrsize, 256 infrInc
227 output frames estimated
pvanal error: cannot create output file

Has anyone else had this problem ? I thought that I might need to specify more
parameters so I tried that too but got the same result. Anyway according to the
manual there are defualt parameters for it anyway..

What ,if anything, am I doing wrong ?

this is an error in creating the new analysis file.

Did you make sure your output file name and default directories (esp.
SADIR) are set up correctly?

sounds like it is probably not the file, but something wrong in your gen01
declaration in your score.

Matt -

Thanks for posting a reply to my query. The f statement I am using is:

 f # 0 0 1 "nameofwretchedsample" 0 4 1 ,i.e:
 time 0,deferred alloc. to file size, gen01,"..",skiptime 0,format = 16 bit
shorts, read channel 1 (file is mono)

 Is this right?

Setting the table size stills give "aiff file truncated by table size,
audio samps (silly #) requires table size (silly #)". Tweaking format and
channel params gives no joy either.

The file is in no way corrupted (sndinfo reads it o.k., I can import and
play it on other sound apps) so I'm a bit confused as to why I can't get
this f statement to work correctly.

Competition closing date: endoftime. Answers by email to the usual address.
The editor's decision is final.
