I have used the Sun's JDK in Windows 95 from a MS-DOS command
prompt. It has both a command-line byte-code compiler and a command-line
interpreter. The compiler's feedback is textual.
To compile a Java source code file, you would type
"javac someprogram.java". This would generate a file called
someprogram.class. You can run this compiled byte-code program by typing
"java someprogram".
Here's the URL for Sun's JDK:

Random directories called "C:\random\SFDIR" etc are not good enough,
they must by using the set command:
set SFDIR=F:\Random\MyLittleSounds
etc. (and no space after that equals sign). Simplest in autoexec.bat,
else in a batch file or at the command line _of_the_same_dos_session_
as where you're running commandline csound from. Opening a
dos window, doing something, and then closing it won't help.

Possibly it's this: You must have the file "Csound.txt" where csound
can find it. Yep.
"But shouldn't the same folder as the csound exe be good enough?"
Hehehe, (*ahem*) NO SIR! - In SFDIR or SSDIR or SADIR or whatever
directory happens to be "current" when you start it. Nothing else.
Well, ok, you can set the special envariable CSSTRNGS (sic) too:
set CSSTRNGS=C:\the_bloody\csound\folder
or use the -j command line flag. See help file for order of
precedence among these fascinating variations.

I'm having problems getting real-time MIDI input to work, and I suspect
that either it is broken in this release, or else there is some
compatability problem with my machine.
I think the conditional-compilation in midirecv.c is somehow broken.
Could someone who is sucessfully using Midi input on this release on
Linux give me some details on their system (libc or glibc, OSS or
OSS-free, etc).
Basically, rather than spending another evening debugging, I'm curious
if the distribution has in fact been build-tested on Linux.
John (JFF): do you still have a Linux machine to verify builds on, or is
it up to however downloads it and tries it? No offence intended here,
it's just that it would be helpfull when downloading a version to know
if in fact someone, somewhere, have built it from the sources and has it
working correctly on Linux. Then, when we have problems, they are easier
to solve if we know whether or not there is a chance that the sources
are broken vs. that we are just overlooking something.
BTW any plans for putting this whole mess under a version control
system?

I have a note that comes on at time zero in the
structure editor of HPKComposer, and I want to create
two notes of polyphony, one coming on at time 5 and
the second coming on at time 7. The problem is that
since the parameters are normalized from 0-127, how
do I create 5 and 7 seconds of silence for each note?
If I set a negative number or a number outside the
normalized zone I get an illegal operation message from
csound (I mean windows). I could always use two more
instruments but I'm trying to be economical. Thanks.

Hmm... I have no quad files handy to try it, but a two-channel version
of this shell script works fine with stereo files. You need a recent
version of sox.
#!/bin/sh
sox $1 -c 1 channel1.wav pick -1
sox $1 -c 1 channel2.wav pick -2
sox $1 -c 1 channel3.wav pick -3
sox $1 -c 1 channel4.wav pick -4

You could do this with Csound if you feel comfortable enough with it ;-)I
have no quad files to test it but the new Maldonado=B4s opcodes (fin, fout=
)
should work fine for that. One could extract the file duration and extend
the event duration to that value, even set the number of output files
match the number of input channels with some sort of macro or conditional
stuff.
