Hi Prent and All,

I am a WinNT user and I use Excel spread sheets for my score
generation. It makes very simple work of otherwise very tedious tasks and
keeps all data in a nice neat rows of cells. By applying formulas which are
put in cells I can easily transpose or repeat (copy and paste) a section
later in a composition without having to retype all the changed p fields.
Some of my compositions have been around six minutes long with many
instruments equating to many thousands of lines of score. This is where it
really pays. In Excel every line is numbered so as a score grows I take
notes of where certain occurrences are and the can put a row number into the
"go to" function and be there without having to scroll all the way to it. I
am not a big proponent of Microsoft in general but Excel is a very powerful
tool. I am sure from Microsoft's rep for "borrowing" ideas that other spread
sheets are similar in function. Well worth the investment in time to learn.
Also one thing I have been toying with is this: In Excel one can plug a
Visual Basic program into any cell. I have not had much experience in
programming languages except in Csound but I am wanting to write small
programs that will generate quasi-random lines of score events as offshoots
to what value I put in a particular cell (p field) depending on what
parameters I have set in the program itself. Kind of a complex fractal
approach. I know it can happen but right now I am trying to learn VB to be
able to do it.
One other item of potential interest is WCSHELL a program written by
Ricardo Bianchinni. I have downloaded a demo of it and it looks great. It is
a spread sheet type program that has been written as a front end for Csound.
It has most of the functionality of Excel but is set up for Csound. A great
idea!! I plan on purchasing a functional version of it as soon as I can.Find
out more here http://www.fabaris.it/bianchini/software.HTM
I hope this has been of some help and interest. Sorry for the length.
Take care .....
