This is to announce the release of Silence 4.1. Silence is my Java system for algorithmic composition and synthesis, using Music Modeling Language for generating scores, and JCsound for synthesizing them. Changes in this release include a simplified user interface, some bug fixes, and a major change in the layout of Music Modeling Language to make it well-formed XML throughout.I also have added some sample compositions, Triptych for Silence and Cloud Strata, which was performed at the 1998 International Computer Music Conference, for JCsound..

Silence is available at http://www.pipeline.com/~gogins. Please email bug reports or questions to me at gogins@nyc.pipeline.com. Silence is licensed under the terms of the GNU General Public License and is available without charge, though donations are welcome.

At this point, I regard the basic class design, language, and interfaces of Silence to be reasonably stable. In particular, I foresee no additional changes to the INode interface or the MML language, so I anticipate that scores created now will continue to be usable in the future.  I therefore invite contributors to write their own compositional INode classes for Silence.
