You are probably not fully awake and just recalling last night's dream. For that matter, how can you be sure that this message you are reading now, is happening in your waking life, and that your aren't just dreaming that you're at your computer reading this. When you actually do wakeup up for real, you'll probably find that the "dream" directory was, in fact, just that. Or you may find that in fact, you don't actually own a computer, but only dream of fanciful email exchanges. To take it one step further, how can you be sure that your idea of this "Csound" program is not just another fabrication of of the dream state that you may very well be immersed in right at this moment? I hope I've answered the question for you ... Larry -- Larry Troxler -- lt@westnet.com -- Patterson, NY USA -- |

I suppose I have to respond to this message >> Why is it that the ftp directory has the name "DREAM" ??? >> Just curious... Well, a very long time ago I had a dream. I dreamt that if someone were to support Csound and other music software, and then there was a single site where recent versions could be found of all one wanted, then the world would be a better place, and I would learn about computer music. The trouble was that one needed a name for the site, and I am not a believer in the cult of the personality. Then it occurred to me that I could pretend to be the Department for Research into Electo-Acoustic Music. It sounded kinda nice -- I was an admired of the CCRMA name and giving good vibes...... How much the reality has different from the concept! Instead of it being a hobby for Saturday mornings it takes a significant part if my time. I did consider renaming it mare (as in night) but I thought it might confuse; already the directory was accounting for well over 90% of ftp requests to the School's server, as about half of the requests to teh university. And then the University created the Centre for Media Research, into which I was dragged (avoiding pictures and videos on the way...). So I still have my dreams; time to compose is one of them. ==John |
