I wonder how to use realtime-output under Linux?

I haven't found anything about it in the dox, and i don't know much about
Linux
(though I do know a whole lot about computers in general..)

It would be nice not having to use "-o /dev/dsp", becaus what I have
understand,
you can't change the playback-rate of this device?
