Subjectgood source for explanation of Csound?
I wrote to the group a week or so ago about trying to come up with some
good background info. regarding the way Csound works (ie, produces
music) -- I'm writing a thesis and need to explain the way Csound
works.

Mike Berry suggested I obtain the Curtis Roads book, _The Computer Music
Tutorial_. I found that book on the MIT press web page at
http://www-mitpress.mit.edu/mitp/recent-books/comp/roads.html

Can anyone verify that this would be a good book to explain the inner
workings of Csound? (It costs about $55, and I would like to know if
it's what I'm looking for before I invest in it -- you know, student
income...)

thanks,
Joel Wilder

The Roads book is good, although it is of Biblical proportions.

I run a course that uses Csound and the text I use is:

Dodge, C. & T. Jerse Computer Music: Synthesis, Composition, and
Performance. Schirmer Books, NY, 1985.

The Music 11 examples use the same syntax as Csound.

The music examples have instruments available in the example orchestras on
the Csound site (Risset, Chowning, etc)

I believe a new edition of Dodge & Jerse is due out soon if not already.
Also check out the Cooper & Boulanger article in Jan 97 Keyboard.
