SubjectFAQ's and trivia
Oh, by the way...

1. FAQ

...shouldn't there have been a FAQ? Like, in connection with
the Keyboard article. It could be expected that a several
new users with computers but without formal training would
drop by to check out Csound. I consider not having a FAQ at hand
more or less a botch-up from concerned parties...

But it's not too late. Any takers? I can help out, but I'm not
a native English speaker, so I couldn't really run that show
by myself (also keeping a full-time job while taking a 15 hrs/week
course in electro-acoustic music puts me off somewhat).
I think there needs to be input from several people, esp. for
installation notes and perhaps comments on available support
progs (like editors and score generators) on different platforms.

So, unless somebody is already secretly doing this, I propose
working in two phases: First collecting questions and people
willing to write answers to these questions, then collecting
the answers, brush them over for proper English and pedagogicality,
patch the bits together and dump on some appropriate server.
This way it could perhaps be done with a smallish effort from any
single individual (I dreamt one night...)

2. Trivia

...I've uploaded my windows help file to
   http://hem.passagen.se/rasmuse/csnd345.zip

It's complete as of the Bath/Montreal version 3.45 release.
Also includes the Robin Whittle ugens. Some inconsistencies
in the format and style of entries, but reasonably well indexed
etc, and only two broken links. (Namely to Cscore and voscili
entries; still awaiting the docs for the latter one, haven't
bothered with the former.)

When the proper help files are available, I'll probably
pull it down, but for now it may be a temporary solution for
Windows users who like to use this particular format.
You could eg look in the index under SFDIR and find the
appropriate section. (Or equivalently of course, load the
standard text file into emacs or Word or any program with
text search capabilities...)

cheers,
	r

as a new user struggling with the very basics of csound / non-computer
programmer /former music teacher with some experience with additive
synthesis and a touch of fm, have already made an offer to help explain to
innocent pedestrians anything that could be made understandable to me. so
far i have found that the answers i get on this list are helpful. i just
bang my head against the wall ten or twenty times and vIola! but i am
beginning to feel a bit woozy. of course i have also already made a couple
of feeble attempts to assist others in distress.

offer stands.

yours,
tolve

Hi,

I've been fiddling around creating a nice vocoder type sound. I made an
orchestra which simply filters two signals into thinnish bands and
balances one against the other. My choice of what bands to use has so far
been pretty much based on a 'try-it-and-see' philosophy. In the end I
built a cheap n cheerful interface in VB4 which runs under win95. If
anyone wants to grab a copy I've made it publicly ftpable at

ftp://128.243.101.213/pub/vocode.zip.

If you don't have VB4 on your machine you'll probably need to download a
couple of extra files that are in the directory.. try running the program
and see what dll's, ocx's it asks for, and then see if I've put them in
the /pub directory. If you need a file that isn't there.. mail me and
I'll put it in.

The interface just gives you 16 sets of sliders for changing the bands and
bandwidths (two sets for each channel so you can map a band in one sample
to a different band in the other). Output is a Csound score and orchestra
and, if you tell it where csound lives, it'll make the output file and
play it to you. It's a bit shoddy, but it works and I've had quite a bit
of fun with it, so I thought I'd let someone else play :)

Matt.

ps. If you do have a go with it.. PLEASE mail me and let me know, bug
reports and comments appreciated.

In a hurry now, but here's some that come to mind:

Q: I can't get linenr to work. Why is this?
A: ..(only works for MIDI)...

Q: How can I view or manipulate lpcanal or pvanal analysis files?

Q: How can I do global processing, like reverb, on the output of a number
of instruments?

A: (explain how to use global vars and a processing instruement)

Ha!, it never fails. Actually it WAS .../cshlp345.zip
which is a much more sensible name, but I've renamed it,
so now the link seems to work.

GrainMaker 2.0, a soundfile granulation Csound score generator
programmed in MAX, is now available at the following ftp sites:

ftp://ftp.ircam.fr/pub/incoming/max-patches/
ftp://serial.music.uiowa.edu/pub/upload/

GrainMaker 2.0 includes the following new features:
1) can transpose soundfiles (including random transposition per
     grain)
2) writes score files directly to the hard drive (no more crashing
     with the text objects)
3) is a stand-alone app (FAT--runs on 68k or PPC)
     a) GrainMaker 2.0 with picts shows grain envelopes as they are
           selected
     b) GrainMaker 2.0 (no picts) requires less memory

Enjoy!
