| Probably no reason at all, other than for portability between machines. On
non-Intel unix systems, aiff would probably be a better bet, as no byte-swapping
is needed. They may be more likely to parse and play it correctly, too! Until
Microsoft defined Type-3, all floating-point formats have been more-or-less
unofficial, with therefore little scope for portability. It will of course be a
while before ~any~ machines can play them directly.
