Following the reports that there were problems with adsyn. This error
was due to a fence-post error in my revision to allow arbitrary
numbers of partials in adsyn. I have found and nailed it now.
All being well I am transferring new versions to the server. I have
called this 3.471 to distringuish -- a minor bug fix system.
Source fanatics need only look at hetro.c and ugens3.c
Oh, and while I am about it, 3.471 for Windows has a new featurette, a
righ-mouse double click will remove the memory of the names for the
orchestra, score and wav editors. I realise this si a little
drastic, and I may add some extra dialog instead. See how it seems!
With apologies to those who were affected by the adsyn bug,
==John

I will take that as a vote for no documentation next time, and you can
all investigate and discover by experiment -- might lead to more
interesting sounds ;-)

Hello!
Sorry for this offtopic posting, but this list is read by so many people
with a wide intellectual horizon, that I think, at least, it is worth a
try.
So I'm looking for sound compression tool that knows the following:
- implemented on unix,
- compression ratio about 1:4,
- can be used in realtime (say on an average PC at about 100MHz),
- sound quality is not most important, as I want to use it at low sampling
rates (<= 11025).
I only know two programs now: both are using losing algorythm and they
are the two extremes, I'd like a solution between the two. One is
`shorten', which can compress at the ratio 1:2 with minimal cpu load
resulting no hearable distortion. The other is using the well-known mpeg
compression method and it is called `l3enc'. As you know, it is the
opposite of shorten, as it can compress 1:5 ... 1:15 but it is very
cpu-eater.
A suitable program for me should know a bit better compression than
shorten, but not demand so much computing. Or do I want too much?
Perhaps a quicker and not so good-quality mp3 coder? Or something
completely else? Please, help me!
Thanks in advance,
Csaba

It dawned to me that there must exist (maybe in some other galaxy, in a
weird subdir called
"drunk elephants, rided by Fitch" or so) another version of Csound, called
"Extended Csound"..
Is it available and what are the differences with the Csound I mess around
with ??
yesterday I did something funny....I made an oscil that sweeps from 10000
hertz to 50 hertz
over a duration of 10 minutes !!!!! All this embedded in a fat reverb of
30 seconds....My parents
went crazy when played this on the hifi.
My parents sayed that it is somewhat weird that I even tend to call this
MUSIC ;-))))
dad: (not really serious) "I think you should pay a visit to a shrink, boy
! "
me : "Why ? I like this, ok ? I'm just experimenting with sound and
signals"
dad : "I don't care what you experiment with, but when you like the shit
you just played, you
are nuts. Music is a physical deed in the first, not tweaking
knobs, there's no skill
needed for that, only idea's."
(note : my dad was I jazzdrummer in his youth (experimental freejazz),
so he's familiar with
the experimental side of music)
me: "Yeah, so ? I can't help it I like electronic sounds ! If one wants to
hear a certain sound that cannot
be produced by usual instruments, he should take the right device
and create that sound, isn't it ?"
dad: "yes, but then you are a sound engineer, not a musician, and there is
such thing as health.
your stuff is not healthy, those silly sounds. Like that Francis
Dhomont shit...I don't call this
music. Music is only music when it is produced by a deed of the
physical body. You have
to have the idea's of course, but the physical act is the most
essential. Electronic music is
unhealthy for the composer, as he solely works with his mind, it's
all happening in his head...
switch on the machine and tweak the knobs. I have much more
appreciation for a musician
who trained himself very hard in order to have ultimate control
over his instrument with his
body. "
me : "you are right about being not a musician, but that it is unhealthy,
that's a little exaggerated"
dad: "What I try to say is, that one becomes alienated from HIMSELF when
physical skills and techniques are
not needed anymore. "
mam : "David, please just don't play your tapes in the living anymore. "
me: "OK, ok......hey dad ! You know what ? Maybe you're right about what
you just sayed, but
signals, sound or music, I don't care....I LIKE IT ! "
Greets,
David.

i always thought of this the other way - so i took a look at the manual
the guard pt defaults to the first value of the table when you don't give
one (have table size a power of 2).
So you really don't need to think about it for an oscilating read. Only
need to give one for single reads (like oscil1i, etc..) if your end pt.
is not the same as the start pt. (otherwise you WILL get interpolation
between the end and "wrapped" beginning point!!)

Mr. Fitch,
Thank you very much for your effort keeping the CSOUND tidy. In this
isolated island where the electro acoustic music is confused with hardcore
it is always a pleasure to have a new version of CSOUND from time to time.
Thanks also to Mr. Piche for Cecilia.

Hello,
I would like to extend my thanks to John ffitch and all those who have
worked so hard to provide us all with Csound. I love this program and I
always begin to tremble a bit when I think of the absolute power over audio
this program allows me to command. And it's still only about one

Please let me add my thanks to the others, for John Ffitch's labor of
love. His work is conscientious and his manner so pleasant (even with
hardware problems) I thought it was his real job. Thanks, Mr. Ffitch,
for working so hard to keep the rest of us from having software
problems.
Thanks also to Jean Piche for his contributions. Most recently, the new
HTML manual is a wonderful resource.

Hopefully with future reviews of Csound the importance of John Fitch's work
will be noted. That kind of work is what makes Csound and this group unique.

In case no-one else has replied:
just use two output args with soundin:
a1,a2 soundin ...
you can even read in four channels, assuming you have some means of
playing them!
(see the manual for more info)

I would also like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation
for what seems to be by far the most courteous, intelligent and mutually
respectful discussion group on the net. Only recently, I looked at
postings on the unmoderated C++ group, to see one contributor using the
f-word in reply to a student posting. That group is no longer on my
list. I know that such a thing will not happen here. I did not get into
computer music for this reason ( I love the subject), but the quality of
the people involved has certainly helped to keep me in it.
So, my thanks to everyone on this list for being so civilized and
interesting.

Hi, there
I also would like to attend your apprietiation and admiration for John
Fitch and other people devoting themselves into Csound and computer
music. For me, I could not buy enough software for my computer music.
When I found that Csound was FREEWARE, and many people were doing for
it, I realized I would use it to learn more about sound and computer
music. I am still a newbie of Csound. Whenever I have questions on
it and mail them to this GREAT mailing list, I always get good and
detailed information!!! I have a dream - one day when I am familiar
enough of Csound, I will do something for it. NO CHARGE! NO PAY!!!
JUST like John and Jean!!! With all my heart, thank all those who
have done something or will have done something for Csound!
Regards
==
