SubjectSpectral Extraction
Recently someone (Richard Karpen?) posted a message saying that he had
added spectral extraction functions/capabilities to the phase vocoding
UG. Is there any documentation for accessing these new functions?
Would the spectral extraction function that was added be similar to the
spectral extraction in Sound Hack (i.e. splitting the sound into two
components, steady and transient)?

Thanks,

Jon Southwood

Yes I did add that to pvoc and pvadd last summer. I sent along new
documentation to John F. at that time. Is it not in the current version
of the manual?

The spectral extraction is similar to that in Soundhack. I also added
an amplitude gating option to these which is not the same as SoundHack
and which does some pretty interesting things to sounds.

If the new descirption is not in the current manual, I'll send them again
to John (John do you still have the docs for pvoc and pvadd I sent last
year?).

For ages! It is called readk though like elsewhere.

Alternatively you can use GEN23 or some such number to read characters
representation sof floats into a table

I've been comparing the pv analysis code in Csound with
that in the Gordon-Strawn article and F R Moore's exposition.
They both make reference to Portnoff's seminal article.
There is a step in the algorithm which calls for a rotation
of the time-series array before it is FFTed. The Csound
code doesn't do that. What gives?

DESCRIPTION

pvread reads from a pvoc file and returns the frequency and amplitude
from a single anaylsis channel or bin. The returned values can be used
anywhere else in the csound instrument. For example, one can use them
as arguments to an oscillator to synthesize a single component from an
analyzed signal or a bank of pvreads can be used to resynthesize the
analyzed sound using additive synthesis by passing the frequency and
magnitude values to a bank of oscillators.

I do have some other files from RichardK on my portable, which is not here.
Will check over weekend.

Attached are the man pages for pvadd and pvoc that include the additions
of spectral extraction and amplitude gating. They have been used to
great effect here at the UW already, so I hope that others will be
able to now take advantage of these utilities.

SubjectRe: Spectral Extraction
Yes I did add that to pvoc and pvadd last summer. I sent along new
documentation to John F. at that time. Is it not in the current version
of the manual?

The spectral extraction is similar to that in Soundhack. I also added
an amplitude gating option to these which is not the same as SoundHack
and which does some pretty interesting things to sounds.

If the new descirption is not in the current manual, I'll send them again
to John (John do you still have the docs for pvoc and pvadd I sent last
year?).
