I can't help feeling this might be a name-change too far - I know (more
or less) what an agogo is , but a gogo must be something (or someone)
else. If someone makes a 'gamelan' or 'gambang' opcode, will they have
to be called 'melan' and 'mbang'?

I agree with Richard. Is there is any reason we can't have a few opocdes
that start with i, k, a, or g if it the letter is necessary for the name to
make sense? There surely aren't enough such cases to cause serious
namespace pollution; and if someone happens to name a variable "agogobel"
and gets an error, well, surely there are other names they could use for
that variable.

Just wondering why Winsound is so much slower than the DOS-console version.
A shorp PVanal analysis takes very few seconds in Maldonados when it nearly
collapses my computer under Winsound... (?)

I have no idea. There are two possibilities:

1: The checking to see if the interface needs attention is way too slow
2: The interface si too slow

and I suppose,
3: I failed to optimise teh compilation.

It was not always thus! Checking the benchmarks show that the cost
was low.

Have you tried using winsound in commandline form?

I agree the main goal of Csound is to provide a flexible and always
growing set of tools for sound design, but I=B4d like to see implemented
some really idiosynchratic presets from some old synths as new opcodes.
Cook=B4s ones are a valuable addition, but I=B4m sure the DX7 has a dozen=
 or
so of established presets, the same with other synths. Hundreds of
presets could be implemented this way. Of course you could do whatever
you wanted with them ... but a DX7 bass is a DX7 bass, a piano is a
piano, and so on. It is convenient to have them ready to be called.
Btw I hate presets ;-) but you can learn a lot from them...

If I may add my two cents . . .

By "preset" do you mean something imitating (or duplicating) a certain so=
und
created by a synth, or the algorithm that produces that sound? The latter
is, IMO, a better candidate for a new opcode. For example, in regard to t=
he
DX7, I think it would be nice to have 6 operator FM, with all 32 algorith=
ms
the DX7 had, implemented as an opcode (or family of opcodes), although ea=
ch
algorithm has been emulated as an instrument. (Of course, it might also b=
e
really difficult to code, or even possibly illegal, if the patent is stil=
l
in effect). But if you mean the DX7 bass (for ex.) itself should be
replicated with an opcode, that seems like an awfully limited-use opcode.
How exactly could you "do whatever you wanted" with such an opcode? Woul=
d
it be merely the algorithm that is used in the DX7, with the appropriate
parameters as defaults, or would it use some modeling technique to emulat=
e
that bass sound? Presumably, even in the latter case, there would be acce=
ss
to certain parameters of the model which one could change to create
different sounds. But I would prefer to see more general synthesis
techniques implemented as opcodes and specific sounds made available as
orc/scos. Perhaps someone could explain to me the advantages of more
specific-purpose opcodes.

There are a number of orcs available on the internet already and more orc=
s
emulating classic synth sounds can always be made available by anyone who
has the interest and the knowledge to create them. This seems to me a bet=
ter
way to make "presets" available, both for educational purposes, and as
starting points for one's own creative work. I would love to see differin=
g
opinions, clarifications, corrections, etc., on this issue.

if someone has gotten it to unzip, could you please send it to me in

I was able to download, and unzip. But when I try to run it under WCShell,
the shell gives an "Invalid procedure call or argument" message. Running
directly from Windows (Start/Run with arguments), Windows says it is not a
valid Win32 application.

Winsound 3.52 runs fine.

Using Stuffit Expander 1.0 on Windows 95, I got a message saying Stuffit had
detected a "cyclic redundancy check (CRD) mismatch." It let me continue, so I
did, but all I got were the files Version1.not, Version2.not, and Version3.not

I hope this helps (I only downloaded and unzipped consound to see what would
happen, so don't send private replys to me)

Excellent, thanks again!

The csound_con.zip file has an error. I've downloaded twice, getting
281.699 bytes both times.
Winzip can open it and unpack the files, but reports bad CRC on unpacking
csound.exe. It is shown in the zip as 539.648 bytes, but unpacks to
542.121 bytes.

Fix: Open the unpacked csound.exe file in a hex editor and delete the first
2473 bytes. The first two bytes in the file should be "MZ" (hex 4D5A).
The resulting file seems to work. (and this is *so* much more simple and
rational than downloading csound_new or csound_win...)

regards,

	re

Hello,

Can anyone point me to information on calculating dynamic sound panning
within an 8-channel speaker matrix? The speakers would be setup in a rough
circle and I'd like to be able to control dynamic placement within this
space with arbitrary trajectory shapes not just linear transitions or
circular movements around the periphery.

Ideally, I'd like to be able to locate mono sound files but also stereo
files--keeping some aspects of the spread stereo image as the file is
dynamically located in the matrix.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
