Hi

Why isn't the manual written using sgml or something? It would probably be
much easier.

Hmm. I just went to my [t]rusty old HTML manual for version 3.53, and I
noticed that the description of the Unified File Format is either
missing or well hidden. However, various release notes seem to indicate
that this feature was introduced at version 3.50.

The files are dated April 14 and I think I got it from Bath, although I
can't verify this, since the ftp server seems to be down at the moment.

Not a big deal, since the new manual just announced seems to have this
info in it. But I just thought I'd mention this in case you guys are
maintaining manuals for non-current versions. Just another minor nit:
this version of the manual doesn't include the email addresses of who to
contact in case of problems (or maybe it does, and I didn't see it). For
example, I don't have Jean Piche's address handy, so I couldn't include
it on this email (he's listed as the editor).

Briefly browsed this on-line, but didn't come across any link to the
non-frames version. Could be that I missed it. I'll be happy using
frames if you can explain what the advantage is, or else buy me a bigger
monitor to make up for the wasted screen-estate ;-)

As most Csounders are probably fairly kerboard-literate (i.e. know how
to jump to the top of a document), I am sure I am not alone in this
opinion!

Reading SGML would be the problem, though, unless it looks like HTML.

I suggested this a while back, but stopped far short of actually
volunteering to help with the effort. An SGML source, with the right tools,
could be used to generate HTML, PostScript, PDF, and probably a few other
handy formats. What do Linux documentation folk use these days?

I have changed pitchamdf for better resolution
in pitch detection at higher frequencies.

Maybe you find it in the next release - if you want to
compile yourself, you can find source and desription at:

http://www.harmonik.de/femc/femcdown.html

Here are the changed sections of the manual entry:

kcps, krms pitchamdf asig, imincps, imaxcps
[, icps][, imedi][, idowns][, iexcps][, irmsmedi]

(In INITIALIZATION:)
idowns - downsampling factor for asig. A factor of idowns>1 results in
faster performance but may result in worse pitch detection.
Useful range for downsampling is 1...4 (integer values).
If negative, upsampling is performed for better pitch resolution.
Useful range for upsampling is -2...-10 depending on the expected
pitch. Note that for idowns = 1, 0, or -1 no upsampling or
downsampling is performed. (Default = 1)
irmsmedi - size of median filter applied to krms output.
In fact, the resulting size of the filter will be irmsmedi*2+1.
If 0, no median filtering will be applied. As krms will nor be
used as often as kcps, irmsmedi is set to 0 by default.

(In PERFORMANCE:)
Pitch resolution considerations: Pitch resolution is always 1 sample due
to the amdf mechanism. For lower pitches this is quite good, e.g. for a
100 cps signal at sr = 44100, resolution would be about 4 cent.
For higher pitches it is quite bad, e.g. for 600 cps, resolution would be
about 26 cent. You can improve resolution by giving idowns a negative value
for upsampling, e.g. with idowns = -3, a signal of 600 cps would be detected
with a resolution as if it were 200 cps. Upsampling will slow down
performance drastically, but if you set imincps to a appropriate high value,
this will be compensated.

Subject: new printi opcode

I found it useful to print out some information for the user
at orchestra start, especially for MIDI realtime instruments.
I wrote a little opcode for that purpose, that just outputs
an info string at i-time. It will output that string even if
all message output is disabled with flag -+O in DirectCsound.

Maybe you find it in the next release - if you want to
compile yourself, you can find source and desription at:

http://www.harmonik.de/femc/femcdown.html

See decription below.
I also changed phasorbnk to use double phase internally
according to the new phasor implementation.

printi
------

        printi "infostring"

DESCRIPTION
This opcode outputs "infostring" at i-time only.
A carriage return is added automatically.

INITIALIZATION
infostring - string to be printed out. Must be in double quotes.

EXAMPLE
printi can be used to output some information about the orchestra
for the user. It will print even if all output is disabled for better
realtime performance (Flag -+O in DirectCsound).
It will normally be used in an instrument that is turned on at orchestra
start and turns itself off immediately. This example outputs some info
about the orchestra with some ASCII-graphics concerning slider assignment:

Is there a Csound version to go with the manual?
Is the Bath server down now?
Is there a maintainer of the Montreal mirror? - it seems
not to be working right, as the latest version
available there is 3.57.
