SubjectCsound newbie- distortion question
Hi,

I'm a newbie to Csound (just started getting into it this weekend). I'm
running Csound3.485 on a 233 MHz G3 Macintosh. I'm particularly interested in
exploring alternate tunings, and Csound seems to work well for that.

My question is about distortion during playback- when I use a sound that is
heavy in sine waves, e.g. the first few examples in the documentation, toot
1-6, I think I hear clipping when the sine waves beat against each other if I
have more than one note playing. I tried lowering the amplitude of the
instruments, but it seems the volume is automatically rescaled! Only relative
volumes between notes seem to work. Is there a way to turn off this automatic
volume control?

By the way, the clipping problem seems to go away (or least is small enough I
don't notice) when I use sounds with more harmonics.

Thanks,
John

Hello

In the Mac interface you have the option ->rescale floats, this
avoids generaly clipping. In the toot, the first two (or three examples)
have no enveloppe, so clipping is normal. Distortion is not normal. You
may have to check your hardware, maybe. Sometimes, when you have a
highly fragmented disk, you may also have clips. So try playing the
output through another player, just to be shure of it.
You can also disable rescaling by selecting in the interface
->16-bit integer.

If you use one of the Bath builds you should use CSound 881 if you
have the floating point chip and CSound 68K if you do not. If the 881
runs, use it. If it crashes, use 68K

...and I need to rebuild these as they are a little out of date.

Hi all,

this new version has the following additions:

Saving-loading a single panel.
Can run Csound iconized or invisible.
Send all controller positions of all panels at one time.
Some bugs fixed.

it can be downloaded from my site:
http://web.tiscalinet.it/G-Maldonado

Cheers

P.S. some people says that an unexpected error appars at the start of
VMCI Plus, could you tell me if it is your case?

Yes, this must have been the reason, I changed the
option and now I get response in amplitude changes.
Also I am very happy about the Mac users manual, I
came across only yesterday, after it was mentioned by
Matt

Sorry, but the version 3.02 suffered of a serious bug, which made it
impossible to open the HVS panel when the example files were used. Also
Csound was started with conosole window always iconized, no matter the
settings. Now these bugs are fixed in the version 3.021 (that can be
downloaded at the same site:
http://web.tiscalinet.it/G-Maldonado

Excuse me for all those ones who already had dowloaded the long zip
file.
