| Thanks for your comments (below), Richard. Yes, that's exactly what is
needed. Trouble is, I'm no programmer so I'll live in hope. Personally, I'm
suprised it hasn't already been implemented as an opcode or as a parameter
within diskin/soundin because I'm always overshooting the file length,
especially when offsetting from the start using a random number from the
score. Also, with diskin it would be usefully applied in calculating the
file's duration when playing at different speeds and for applying the right
envelopes etc.
Anyway, Thanks again. (Thanks also to the others, but I wasn't thinking of
the loscil/gen01 option).
Richard Bowers.

Hi,
I made some corrections to my Realtime article in this issue of Csound
Magazine. I had the virtual midi ports connected incorrectly as I described
in the article. It should be OK now. Thanks to Michel Jullian for offering
the corrections.

Can anyone help? This is what I want to do:
Write different soundfiles using one soundout each time the instrument is
called from the score ie:
score:
i1 0 10
i1 0 5
i1 2 10
etc.
resulting in (say) sound1.wav, sound2.wav, sound3.wav and so on.
I would like to do it without specifying the names in advance but just to
have an incremental numbering system. This is because, ultimately, I would
like to do it
(using the DirectCsound fout opcode) in a realtime MIDI setup.
Subsequently, I would need to apply the same principle to the soundin/diskin
ugs for retrieving the files.
Thanks in advance.
Richard Bowers.

A second thought about Richard Dobson's suggestions (below) is that I,
personally, would find the option of an independent 'sndinfo' opcode
preferable in the long run (rather than extending the existing sound-file
opcodes) because I can already forsee instances where the information would
be useful without having to call-up the soundin/diskin opcodes (eg. you may
wish to write a file of identical length as the original or maybe write some
k-rate control procedure but don't require the source sound).
Just a thought in case any of you brilliant and talented programmers fancied
the challenge of writing something :)
Thanks
Richard Bowers.

Of course your assertion

is false if X=1

i dont know anyone with CE running any good software. but i guess that
is because i am a palmpiloteer and CE is my mortal enemy.
that aside, you would probably need to specially recompile and even
rewrite system stuff in csound for it to work in CE. as far as i know,
you cant just d/l a real windows file onto CE and it works. also,
generating wav files is a concern, as handheld devices dont have hard
drives, but have memory (8 or 16 megs on CE devices). any good csound
work easily fills up that space quickly. also also, the processor is
_really_ slow compared to desktop computers, so it would take a long
time. also also also, CE devices are noted for their very short battery
life, 2 or 3 hours from what i have heard. i doubt you could keep the
device alive long enough to finish generation.
i dont think CE devices can use PCMCIA cards of any sort. sound
features are built right into the OS. you should realize that windows
CE is not normal windows, but a very slimmed down version, with much
more limited ability.
of course i could be wrong on most of this too. i dont own one and i
dont want to. they are slower, more bloated, and more expensive than
palmpilots. they also run windows, which isnt a good thing. but you
also cant do any of this stuff on a palmpilot.
i dont mean to be such a downer on this topic, but running csound on a
handheld computer is really beyond the technology right now. this could
change next year though.
there is a list called handheld-music@onelist.com that discusses musical
uses of small computers. i have done midi controllers for my palmpilot,
and soon i will begin work on an app that emulates the peavey 1600x.
info on the list can be had at
http://www.crudites.org/soundventures/handheld-music/
good luck! if you get something going, please let us know at
handheld-music. this is an exciting time to be doing computer music!

i could make these if noone else is...

It runs fine in Csound console version 3.55 (Jun 20 1999)
on a Windows 95 machine. I changed the output file name
though (nonexistent directory makes Csound die with an error
message). The output however contains some rather uninformative
error messages:

At present time an 'fclose' opcode doesn't exist yet. So, each time a
new file is created, it will be written continuously up the end of
Csound session. However now it is possible to pass string arguments by
the score, so it is possible to write more file, opening them at
different times. It is not good for realtime performances. Also, a
string manipulation opcode doesn't exist, so the filenames must be
already defined by the user as string constants at the orc/sco design
time. So, for now, you have to do this task manually, editing the wave
files generated afer the realtime session by means of a wave editor
(such as Cool Edit).

Hi!
What would be the best approche to developing new DSP effects, with minimal
'inventing the weel' and maximum flexability?
Is CSound a good tool for that?
Or maybe using the c source of csound to built new opcodes?
Thanx,
Oded. |
