b has the effect of chnaging the interpretation of all textually later
note onset times by adding the b argument. So suppose you have just
written a 5 minute pop song, and feel the need for a short
introduction, for which another section will not do, as it must
overlap. The solution is to take the song score
f1 0 8192 10 1
f2 0 2048 1 "wood.wav" 0 0 0
...
i1	0.000000	2.000000	9.02	64	; D
i1	2.000000	2.000000	8.09	64	; A
i1	4.000000	2.000000	8.06	68	; F#
...

and add the new intro, follwed by a b statement, saying when you want
the original stuff to kick in

so
f1 0 8192 10 1
f2 0 2048 1 "wood.wav" 0 0 0
...
i10 0 1154
b 5 ; Reset time
i1	0.000000	2.000000	9.02	64	; D
i1	2.000000	2.000000	8.09	64	; A
i1	4.000000	2.000000	8.06	68	; F#
....

and one is excused renumbering the 5600 events or whatever.

I hope that explains one of its uses.

==John ffitch

PS that score is Copyright me, and is the start of my last piece,
written with Rosegarden->Csound. Yes i do actually use b as I said.

I don't think it is reasonable to flame David for the current state of
affairs with respect the manuals. The Bath version wasn't very well
maintained for quite a while as far as I can tell, so I think it is only
laudable that there is now (actually since July) an HTML version of
David's PDF manual, which is kept up-to-date. David has made exactly
clear in messages to this list the origin and rationale of the PDF
manual. The HTML manual is derived from that and is not a continuation
of the Bath manual. Since this is all non-paid work, we have to respect
the fact that someone doesn't have the time to include something, such
as the tutorials.

On a pristine source, but recompiled Linux unnoficial 3.57, I'm finding
that sustain-on messages work, but sustain-off messages don't abort the
sustained instances - the instruments just keep playing.

I had assumed that using the sustain pedal would be equivalent to
delaying the note-off events until the time the pedal is released, but
perhaps I'm mistaken? Is there something else I need to learn about?

Here is my instrument:

instr 1
       aexcite init 0.0
       inum notnum
       icps cpsmidi
       a1 wgpluck icps, 0.3, 0.35, 0.12, 5, 20, aexcite
       out 20000 * a1
       foutir git1 , 0, 1, inum
endin

Ok, my sustain-off problem goes away when the call to foutir is removed.
Haven't looked into it further, but for now, beware. Using sustain-off
with MIDI real-time input, with an instrument that uses foutir, results
in the sustained notes never being removed (sustain off has no effect)

Who is this saint, who, from time to time, offer us all the new versions of
the Csound manual, in any format _useful_ for consulting it, and quietly
accepting the suggestions of other users, without a complaint?

Thank you very much David, for your enormous effort keeping the manual tidy=

Time for a G4@500, Drew!

P.S. Have a look to the sound encoders that come with Quicktime 4. That is
compression! You dont need the Pro version, just use MoviePlayer 2.5 (you
keep a copy, dont you?)

Yes, I have the tutorials, but only in Acrobat format right now. They are
in the Supplement. You can get it from:

http://www.geocities.com/~csoundmanual

The tutorials never (well, rarely) change. The manual changes constantly.
Some people do not use the tutorials, so it makes sense to put them in
another volume. They are out of the way if you don't need them, but
available if you do. And they don't get in the way of manual maintence, you
don't have to download them unless you want to, etc., etc.

In maintaining the Acrobat manual, I have tried to arrange it so that one
needs print as few pages as possible with each update, and simply add or
replace them into an existing copy. After all. I and many others like to
have an up-to-date hard copy of the manual, but don't own a paper mill, or
don't want to deforest the earth, or whatever.

Recently, the manual has become so unwieldy that its organization has
suffered and updates are large - sometimes as much as 1/3 the entire
manual. With the manual now at 400++ pages, that's a lot pf reprinting
every few weeks. I don't like this personally, I'm sure others don't
either. That is why it is undergoing major overhaul - to make maintenance
easier on my end, and updating your copy more efficient on your end.

It just makes more sense to have tutorials in a separate volume. If you
want them, please get the supplement. BTW, Dr. Boulanger has updated his
tutorial since the Bath manual.

Thanks to all for your support.

-David.

It sure would - provided you have a flag that tells the
opcode to use "printf" or "putchar" to decide if you want
to see the output even if all printing is disabled for
realtime performance - that was the main purpose of printi.

And, I think, you would have to do some internal handling
of "print" in RDORCH.C like for the "oscil" variations, as
on one hand you need the variable parameter list first as
in the current version, on the other hand the string first,
then the mode flag, then the variable parameter list.
I've never done that kind of handling in rdorch...

Thanks for the clarification. This makes perfect sense to me. I think it
is actually a much clearer explanation of what effect b has than the
current (3.57) manual entry. I would like to suggest the following
manual entry, based on jpff's above-quoted message and some further
experimentation:

b Statement

  b p1

Description

This statement resets the clock.

P Fields

p1 Specifies how the clock is to be set.

Special Considerations

p1 gives a value to add to the start times of all textually (not
temporally!) subsequent notes in a score section. This "clock" value is
reset each time a b statement is given; there is no cumulative effect.
If p1 is positive, the affected notes will occur later; if p1 is
negative, they will occur earlier. If p1 = 0, the clock is returned to
its original position and subsequent events will occur at their given
p2.

The b statement can be used to change the relative start times of any
number of events within a section without having to change each note's
p2. The advantage over using separate sections is that the notes
affected can thus be made to overlap or even change their order, whereas
sections are always strictly sequential.

Example

i1 0 2
i1	10	888
b 5 ; set the clock "forward"
i2 1 1 440	; start time = 6
i2	2	1	480	; start time = 7
b -1 ; set the clock back
i3 3 2 3.1415	; start time = 2
i3	5.5	1	1.1111	; start time = 4.5
b 0 ; reset clock to normal
i4	10	200	7	; start time = 10

reset each time a b statement is given; there is no cumulative effect.
