| I was afraid the finger might get pointed at me! The trouble is, I
happen never to have properly looked at the fractional instr number
system (I have also completely failed to comprehend it form the
manual...). In the book I do ties and general legato using the negative
p3 system, which works very well. I suspect that the issues I look at in
the book (context, continuity across notes, etc) would apply to the
fractional instr number method too. I will do some homework, soon, I
promise!

There was some discussion about this subject it the music.dsp list. Some
guys
have developed simple programs to deliver MIDI over a ethernet. I got a
working package at

According to the page, the book's not going to be available until Sept
'99. Are there any previews other than the table of contents etc.?
Also, I noticed that there's a rather large list on the 'recommended
listening' page. Are these all albums that feature Csound or are they
just masters of digital synthesis? I didn't think Aphex Twin used
Csound...

I am going nuts trying to get some simple gui action happening, I'm web

will get something happening graphically with Csound, or any thing where
I can have my external synth play one note via code, at least to get me
started?

while i have heard that aphex twin uses csound a bit these days, i am
pretty sure that he didnt use it for the albums listed. also, varese
couldnt have used it as he died about the time of music5 by max.
there are some great things on that list, but few seem to have direct
relation to csound. how did that funk album get in there? i didnt
realize rick james was so computer oriented.
what i would love to see is a list of available recordings that really us=
e
csound. i think i am finally doing some nice things with it. would be
nice to see what others are up to.

I was quite surprised not to see Terre Thaemlitz listed there, seeing as
the likes of Oval and Panasonic were included. Thaemlitz definitely uses
Csound, he raves about it on his page (http://www.comatonse.com/thaemlit
z/). I didn't see Erik Dahl listed either - he's an artist on Thaemlitz'
Comatonse label (who also apparently ported Csound to the PowerMac).
There's info about his release 'Anti-Instrumentations', which was
entirely created with Csound, at http://www.comatonse.com/releases/c001.
html, and samples too I believe. I would very much recommend anything by
either of these artists - it was through my interest in Thaemlitz and
Dahl's work that I first became aware of Csound. Thaemlitz' latest CDs,
'Institutional Collaborative' with Jane Dowe and 'Love for Sale: Taking
Stock in our Pride' (both on Mille Plateaux) are both absolutely
fantastic. I haven't come across anything by Dahl other than 'Anti-
Instrumentations', but if anyone knows of anything else he's released
I'd be glad to hear of it!
I too would welcome a list - maybe a site? - of artists using/recordings
made using Csound. As soon as I can do more than create a simple
sinewave oscillator I'll be glad to contribute to it!

Thanks to everyone who has replied to my query about midi networking. I
will try this and report how it turns out!
I have another question, and this actually pertains more or less to
csound.:
I pose this to PC users: when I write a script that pans hard left or
hard right, the result is a sound that is not fully in the specified
speaker. It's more like a 70/30 split. It's not just csound either...I
tried a bunch of applications. Each time I make sure sound is being sent
to one side and nothing is being sent to the opposite side, I get the
70/30 split rather than 100/0. Some machines, however, work okay in that
I CAN get hard left or right. I called IBM tech support and they were
not too helpful. Has anyone here experience this problem with stereo
imaging? I have a PnP Audio Crystal FM Synthesis soundcard (built into
the system) and I wonder if it's my card that's causing the problem.

It is probably just a list of albums that Richard Boulanger likes, or
thinks are representative of good trends in electronic music today.
Most of the composers I saw either used analog synths (Subotnik,
Vangelis, Orbital), pre-synth electronics (Louis & Bebe Barron,
Stockhausen), samplers (Squarepusher, Seefeel, DJ Spooky), or computer
music programs other than Csound.
As far as Aphex Twin goes, the albums listed rely heavily on samples,
Oberheim Matrix-1000, Korg MS-20 (for filtering drum parts, with lots of
overdrive and audio-rate filter modulation), and the usual Roland x0x
boxes. However, his current work ("Richard D. James Album," "Come to
Daddy") is almost certainly made using digital synthesis techniques.
The drum parts seem to be based on a combination of algorithmic
composition, samples, and multitap delay lines, for an erratic
machine-gun effect, with fills that occur at tempos running well into
the audio range. I have achieved similar results using Csound, with
Common Music used to generate the score. OK, it doesn't sound as good,
but it is still a lot of fun.
Sean Costello
P.S. Can any of the Csound filters be modulated by an a-rate signal,
instead of a k-rate signal? Some of my favorite sounds come from
audio-rate modulation of the cutoff frequency of a resonant filter.
Aphex Twin, for example, runs his drums through the filtering section of
a Korg MS-20, which is a Sallen-Key highpass and a Sallen-Key lowpass
filter in series, with independent cutoff for each; often, at least one
of the filtering sections will be modulated by the input signal. I know
I could just set the k-rate to be identical to the a-rate, but that
would really slow things down. Any advice? |
