| Seems like I 've gotten it to work before, but can't now. See the example
below. Either I am not using it correctly or there is a bug. The example
below outputs silence.
Different frequency and/or amp values seem to make no difference, nor does
specifying a different type of noise in f1. However, if I make igfn = 2 (a
sine wave), I get the expected results. Also, I have not been able to output
straight (non-granular) noise from a GEN 21 table.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.
-David.

Hi,
Has anyone else encountered problems running Winsound under Windows NT?
How about NT server? The 'remain active' and 'play at end' tabs function
only rarely -- a small but irritating problem. Thanks.

Only the the "Play at End" function does not seem to work. However, Winsound
appears to be playing the sound, it just isn't making it to the proper
place. I'm not sure this is a Winsound problem. My experience has been that
sound under NT is more fussy than under Win 9x. Try using "Play at End"
without "Remain Active."
"Remain Active" and the little checkbox to load your sound editor both work
fine for me. I'm using NT 4, SP 4, workstation.

Hi All,
I am using WinNT Workstation 4.0 SP5 and have had no such problems.
However I am currently using Winsound version 3.56. I have downloaded 3.59
but 3.56 works so well I don't want to change. The problems you mention, for
me, seemed to be present in versions earlier than around 3.55 (if memory
serves) but have since been corrected. I hope they have not come up again. I
will give 3.59 a try and let you know what happens.

Problem is that table f1 (which you use for noise
audio source), ends up at level zero:
f1 0 32768 21 1 ; white noise
- you need to set the "level" parameter, ie
f1 0 32768 21 1 1 ; white noise
This is somewhat counterintuitive behaviour - other
Gens are scaled to amp 1 (one) unless told otherwise.
Btw, I noted that the uniform Gen 21 gives positive-only
values, is *this* right? - Gens should by default give
normalized values (plus/minus max), not? - that's what
the other gen21 distributions do...

That was me. The problem was with sustain-pedal input with real-time

Well, yes. It uses the corresponding x-class noise ugen.

Thanks for the information, which should be obvious from in the manual. I
was misreading the docs and thought the level arg applied only to Beta
(type=9) and Weibull (type=10). This makes me realize that, in the manual,
the optional arguments for GEN functions are not bracketed like they are for
the orchestra opcodes. That's about to change.
As for the distribution, yes, uniform noise should be positive only,
according to my reading. GEN21 performs the same job(s) as the x-class noise
opcodes, except in ftable instead of opcode form. Some of the x-class noise
generators are positive only and some are symmetrical (+/- range). Uniform
noise is a postive-only one.
BTW, where does the term "x-class noise generators" come from?
-David.
