This is the syntax of poscil:
ar poscil kamp, kcps, ifn [,iphs]
It DO use a table number!!

Subject: [Csnd] Uses of Global Variables
Hello Csounders,
Would any of you care to share how you have used global variables in
ways other as than "effects sends" for reverbs, delays, etc? I'm
currently designing a tool for orchestra creation, and such feedback
would help me insure that my handling of global variables is
sufficiently robust. Example orchestras would be handy. Also, please
email me privatly to avoid bugging everyone on the list, unless of
course this would be of interest to the list. I'll be glad to share
with those who are interested any unusual uses that are sent to me.
thanks!!!

Do you guys feel the much smaller set of opcodes available in Extended

Hello,
[>] buttons do not work either but in my case, do not work entirely also
at first time.
Which registry does Winsound refer to? I will be able to try changing it
directly.
And, does it allow long file names and spaces surrounded with double
quotations for both a text editor and associated files?
Thanks in advance,
Kanata

Subject: Re: [Csnd] Is poscil bugged
Sorry but I used the Cecilia inline CSound manual and it specifies:
"ar poscil kamp, kcps, kfrac[, iphs]
kfrac - fractional width of the pulse part of a cycle. poscil is a k-rate
varying pulse-width audio oscillator, with on/off levels set to provide a
zero-average DC
offset. Although pulse-width oscillation is an unnatural signal (it does not
occur in natural instruments), it is a popular source in synthesizers. "
It's CSound(version 3.47) html documentation.
So it is a documentation error.
Thanks for the help.

The point is this: usually include files are all braced up with a classical
scheme like this
-----say this is rpcasync.h, for example-----
/*
* bla bla
*/
#if !defined(__RPCASYNC_H__) <<<<<<<<<<<< watch this
...
... all of the include file goes here
...
#endif /* !defined(__RPCASYNC_H__) */
-----end of file rpcasync.h---------
this is to avoid multiple inclusion etc. (by the way, many of the csound
headers don't follow this scheme - bad, bad...)
So if you
#define __RPCASYNC_H__
you may later on #include but the above define will
make it just an empty file instead of actually including the file.
For all the ugly thing you can cook up with C (and C++, and any nice
free form language you can think of), this is probably one of the worst,
because you have things done behind your back by the pre-processor
without even looking at things. If is not needed, then
it should be removed (better) or ifdefed for a particular platform (worse).
The GNU configure utility usually figures these things out for you
automatically (best).
I hope this was the explanation you wanted.
Forgive me if it was'nt.
ciao

There's a plain-text .INI file; "Winsound.ini", in the
Windows folder.

Uhm, in principle, yes, it should hopefully work.
Not sure what about a text editor (try it), but I've
managed to use long file names with soundin several times,
so it may work.

Ah, I almost suspected it.
Well, this opcode was announced for Csound 3.47, but never
actually appeared in the Csound exe AFAIK. Don't know why
or where it went.
Anyway, now poscil is the one you've had quoted at you,
but you can use vco to get a pulse-variable oscillator.

Subject: [Csnd] can't find opcodes
Hello Everyone,
I'm new to the group and I've been analyzing some of the orc files that
have been submitted to the list . I have noticed that some of the opcodes
aren't in my Csound manual version 3.493. For
example, dclck, isweep, ipanl, ipanr . Am I missing something? Maybe
I'm not looking them up right? Or am I using an older manual....it was a
hand me down from someone.
Thanks,
Alex

Subject: Serious bug causes compiler-dependent error
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

Hi all,
I noticed that Intel-compiled ultra-fast version of DirectCsound
presents a bug due to the compiler parsing.
This bug is evident in sliderXX opcodes.
the reason is that the code:
**result++ = value * (*max++ - *min) + *min++; /* scales the output */
produces a different behaviour different from the two lines:
**result++ = value * (*max++ - *min) + *min; /* scales the output */
min++;
While in MSVC both the two examples are parsed correctly, the Intel
compiler produces a wrong result in the first example, the correct one being
the second. So it is not possible to include the same variable in the
same instruction twice, when the second occurrence of that variable is
incremented. Please modify standard version to accomplish this drawback.
Maybe there are other occurrences of this technique in other parts
of Csound code, so it is necessary to investigate.

Subject: Re: [Csnd] can't find opcodes
All the instructions beginning whith i are variables not opcodes.
They are created by the user in his orchestra to pass values from the score.
They can't thus be in the manual. Example isweep, ipanl (wich must be, I guess
the panoramic value for left channel), ipanr (same for right channel,
generally equal to 1-ipanl).
Same for instructions beginning with k and a wich can neither be opcodes.

>From my (far from complete) reading of the C standards, and various
other tomes, this use of a pointer increment in the same expression as
the non-incremented pointer is 'undefined' in terms of code generation.
It's not really a bug, as such - compilers are free to interpret it in
their own way. Wrapping the non-incremented pointer inside brackets
does not seem to be sufficient to guarantee the required order, as it
is still a coponent of the complete expression, so that "*min++" could
still be calculated first. Out of order exectution, pipelining and all
sorts of other optimisation gizmos can casuse the compiler to do
something we might not expect, and this sort of expression is,
apparently, fair game.
Thus, in principle, the ~same~ compiler might code the first example
differently, at different levels of optimization. It may even be more by
luck than judgement that MSVC does it correctly. I still remember the
first release of VC++ v.5, as the optimizer completely wrecked
floating-point code.
Maybe it is just difficult for a compiler to flag a variable as
dependent on itself?

Subject: Re: [Csnd] DeckII distortion of FOF files
Unless the FOF soundfiles are already at peak amplitude, this sounds
more like a bug in Deck. From what other people have said, variously,
this is not too surprising. Is the result actually clipped, or is there
some other form of distortion going on?
One problem with FOF-like sounds is that the peak level can be very
different from the rms or power level, so that though it is full-scale,
it does not ~sound~ very loud. Thus it may be quite easy to push such a
sound beyond the peak level.

Sorry, but this is more your fault than INTEl's.
The C-standard explicetely quotes, that the order of
subexpression evaluation is completely undefined. (cf. eg. K&R Appendix
A.7)
So, whatever compiler you use, the second version is correct C, whereas
the first is, at least, questionable.
(But its a nice example. I will use it in my C-courses :-) )

Thomas

Hello!
Yes, I compile my own derivate of DirectCsound with VC++ v.5, and it wrecked
my code, too. I wonder why the rest of the program works!
I found a solution which may interest other people: If I use the "improve
floating point consistency" option to compile my opcodes, it works. What a
great feature - you can switch on and off the bugs!

Hi Jeremy,
I'm currently using global variables to create switches within other
instruments, activated remotely depending on events in another instrument.
I'll try to get an instrument to you (I'm at another place right now).

Winsound uses winsound.ini in the Windows folder
Editor can be unset by right button in dialog background (I think it
was)
Not sure about the other questions.
