Good grief!! Thanks for all this... set-up report. Problem is I'm doing
all this blind since I dont have a Linux system. As it turns out, I
think it is difficult to assume that all Linux systems are the same...
Without Dave Phillips I would not have been able to make this work at
all.
Most problems have to do with installation and deep-down behaviour that
was designed to be SGI/Standard-Unix friendly, with no afterthought for
eventual porting...
I'll try and clean this up for the next version...

Thank you for the help. In summary, I had to:
1. change the location of the wish binary in ../cecLINUX/dev/xcec
2. add 'export USER=$LOGNAME' to /etc/profile (BASH seems to
use
$LOGNAME instead of $USER)
