ANNOUNCE: Visual Orchestra 1.9 and apologies for absence

SubjectANNOUNCE: Visual Orchestra 1.9 and apologies for absence
I'm reposting this message as it didn't get through the first time.

Hi all,

I have finally managed to collect the mail messages for my
address having set up a remote
password -- I'm now living in the Netherlands. I will get round to
answering all of them in the next few days, including all
subscriptions
to the VisOrc mailing list - which incidentaly, I can now manage
properly
again.

Visual Orchestra now has a new download site with no bandwidth
restrictions, also if your in Europe it should be pretty fast.

I released VisOrc 1.9 last week and its at the above site,
however, as the only way I have to thoroughly test the software is
to release it AND as I've recieved lots of suggestions in the last
week you might want to wait until I release the new build (This
should be in the next week). The download is a chunky 6Mb.

kind regards to you all,

Dave

the FAQ in progress can be found at...

http://www.ping.be/calliope/Csound

there is i am sure much that is in progress to be in progress and not
yet up, including links i had compiled. this task, miniscule as it may
be on the csound scale, is a black hole of work -so to all by all means
offer assistance to Richard Boulanger < if you are
able. as for myself, stopped sleeping months ago as i am producing a
theatrical project which you will find in a post following this one.

Try removing the spaces in the set command argument such as:

set sfdir=3Dc:\csound\waves

Dear Erik! Thank you, it's really works!
And what about flags? I leaved them "as is" because my understanding of i=
t
is
too poor (where can I read something useful about analysis programs?)
Can you advice some flags settings for better results?
And one more question. I defined SFDIR,SSDIR,SADIR in Autoexec.bat as:

set SFDIR=3D C:\Csound\Waves
set SSDIR=3D C:\Csound\Samples
set SADIR=3D C:\Csound\Analyses

Say I run Winsound=3D>Utilities=3D>Hetrodyne Analysis and set output into=
 the
same
folder where the input file is. If I move it into "Analyses" and try to r=
un

"Rendering" Csound can not load the .ads file. Only if I set output of
Hetrodyne Analysis (.ads file) into "Analyses" it works right (but not
every time). May be it's the Win95 problems?

(Hope you can understand my English).

Hi everyone,

This gets weirder and weirder...

On Oct. 5, I wrote this to the csound mailing list:
>I would like to propose adding an archive of this list to
>http://www.egroups.com/
>... Unless the group decides otherwise, I
>volunteer to make this happen.

I heard directly from one or two people (one was Hans, I think) saying
"Good idea, go ahead." Nobody said it was a bad idea. So I figured I
should just do it.

Well, I went back to egroups and started reading their documentation
about the process of creating a group, archiving an existing mailing
list, etc. I tried to create a new group called Csound to archive our
mailing list in, and got an error: "A group is already using that name."
Where'd that come from? Sure enough, there it is:
http://www.eGroups.com/list/csound

Somehow I guess I must have overlooked this group when I first stumbled
on egroups.com. You'd think the search I did for any message containing
"csound" would have turned it up! Anyway, at this point I didn't care, I
was just happy that there's an archive of the list accessible
and--wonder of wonders--searchable!

But now things are REALLY strange. When I tried to view some of the
5.000+ messages archived there, I kept getting "Access Denied: The
archive of this list is not publicly available." Then there's a prompt
for a username and a password. I try the same username and password I
use to log in to egroups.com, and the Access Denied message repeats.
Presumably access to this group is limited in some other fashion, so I
just need to find out who runs the archive and how I can get in, right?

So I sent a message looking for some information to the (anonymous)
maintainer of the archive. I haven't heard back yet. I thought I'd
try James Andrews, since his name is on the (two-year-old) introductory
message
that pops up at http://www.eGroups.com/list/csound. But James has
nothing to do with it, and furthermore said that "I've looked at this
egroups thing before but I certainly wouldn't consider it for use as a
place to archive the csound list as it looks like a spam magnet to me."

Well, that's certainly a valid concern that should be addressed for any
potential online archive. What to do?

Anyone have any idea what this is all about? Who put that egroups
archive up there? Is it really a spam magnet? Should we get rid of it?
If not, how the heck do you get access to it?

Thanks for any replies,

Paul Winkler

Hi,
I am new here. Please forgive me for not taking the time to get used to the
'turf', but I need some help in a hurry.

Every sound file I create with csound comes with distortion. In regular
"melodic" types of scores I get a click at the end of each note. When I try
granular synthesis scores I usualy get a high pitched crackling sound which
gets higher and stronger the greater the rate of grain succession (~500+
/sec). So far I have tried, without success, the following things which
were suggested to me by other csound users:

1. creating a control signal which has 1 period per duration of note (1/p3)
and patch that into the amplitude parameter of my instrument definition.

2. using the 32bitfloat-->16bit int option when generating sound file (PPC)

3. compile the sound with the -l or -f flags (SGI)

I would appreciate any comments and suggestions. Sorry if my question is
too trivial...

C.M.

We would really need to see an example score+orc causing the problem, to give an
accurate answer, but the first question must be - are you applying an envelope
to each note? Unless there is such an envelope (rising from, and falling back
to, zero), you will get clicks at the start and end of each note. Another
possibility is severe amplitude overflow, so that everything is getting clipped.
But it could be any of a number of things. Do post an example!

Hi,

M. Goggins page says this requires Symantec itools. Where do I find
that if in fact it's even available outside of buying Cafe.
Any other help in getting this program to run would be welcome.

Thanks

An improved version of Silence, not requiring Symantec.itools and featuring
a direct Java interface to Csound, will be posted to my web page either this
weekend or by the end of next weekend. This version will still require the
Java Foundation Classes (Swing), beta 3, as well as JDK 1.1.5 or greater,
but it should be much easier to set up and get working.
