The Cygwin library implements posix threads as well as many other posix
API's. See http://sourceware.cygnus.com/cygwin/

I think there may be a need for a new mailing list list on algorithmic
composition and it seems that algo-comp@uiowa.edu has gone.

And also I would be interested in a list for discussions of
pyschoacoustics.

If you think either of these are needed I can start the set up
process; or if you can point be at alternatives

There's already a very good psychoacoustics list, called the
AUDITORY list, managed by Prof. Al Bregman. We host the list

is a complete archive there.

This list was created to support the PC port of Csound; at almost the
same time teh csoudn list from Exeter was started, and so this list
has become even less important as the csound list has grown.

My mailing-list administrator is looking at lists at present and so
it seems the correct time to remove this list.

Any objections to me please; if I hear nothing I will can it from mid
July.

Hi. I'm a newbie to Csound. I've been looking at it on and off for
a year and a half or so. I've looked at most of the tutorials at one time
or another. I've had two college courses in C and one in C++ but I'm
quickly forgetting a lot of what I've learned. I'm using a Mac G3 with OS
8.1.
Lately I've been interested in granular synthesis. My first
successful experiment was with a simple noise generator and a large score
generated by Cmask. (O.K., not exactly ground breaking but it's a start).
Now I want to apply granular synthesis to an existing sound file and
gradually merge the two sounds (white noise being shaded by the timbre of
a trumpet for example). At first I thought about using soundin so I looked
at Tutorial Eight. But I got unexpected results with it. Recent discussion
on the list suggested that there was a bug in soundin. jffitch posted a
fix but I was confused as to whether this was a fix for soundin or just
follow (incidentally, I don't have the source code).
Hans Mikelson also posted an instrument for granular synthesis of
a sound file using the grain opcode. It's a nice effect, but not what I'm
looking for, even with the random read turned off. I want a playback that
sounds as the original (at least initially, with the possibility of
altering the sound later). I haven't been able to get grain to do that.
I've also tried using GEN 1. But all of my rendered files come out
with no amplitude. I would like to know the following:

Could someone confirm the status of soundin?
Can grain be used for normal playback of a file (i.e. the rendered
		file sounds like the original)?
Can anyone tell me why I get an amplitude of 0.00 for GEN1?
(Actually, I've changed the files a bit so I don't even
get that anymore- what's going on?)
What is a good value in cps to get a normal playback, 440? 1? a
		magic number?
How would one go about synchronizing the overlap of grains
generated by multiple opcode calls within one instrument
		or by multiple instruments?
Are there any suggestions as to how to go about merging a cloud of
noise with an existing sound over time? (O.K., convolution
is one alternative, but I'm trying to implement/
		understand granular synthesis).

Thanks,
Brian

The syntax to use stdin as a -M input is not as you suggest but
dd if=/dev/midiNN bs=1 | tee my-midi-session | csound -M stdin .....

Not tested of course my me.

I do not have the sources for these opcodes; that is the main reason
they are not in my sources.

And yes I admit that there are examples of opcodes which for which I
do have sources and I have not incorporated. These are opcodes which
in my opinion are not consistent with Csound as it stands, and as such
I have and am resisting them. There are some others which I plain do
not understand, and until I do I am reluctant to include them. After
all it is not as if I have infinite time. I am just emerging from a
mountain of marking, committee meetings and the like, but I do also
have a major software release to organise for one of my jobs (and I
have been fighting teh Macintosh all weekend for this), as well as 3
PhD theses to read.
