Does anyone have a good sounding rim shot ? I tried to mix
a lower (~300Hz) and a higher (~5kHz) frequency oscillator, both with a
short exponentially decaying amplitude envelope (expseg) but
it didn't sound too good. Any tips ?

Hi all,

I too have a piece (a Csound composition) on the SEAMUS Audio Clip
concert, and I agree, the sound quality does not reflect the sonic
subtleties that are inherent to the composition. I am, however, thrilled to
have the chance to heard. Thanks to all involved at SEAMUS.

The 4 speaker output is already possible with the sblive (as well as the
5.1 speaker surround systems if you have the corresponding Creative
speaker set)! Use the Init3dAudio and Out3d opcodes and place them
anywhere in the 3-d space.

Unfortunately the outq opcode is still not useable in realtime, since
Creative doesn't released the plain use of the four outputs
independently in its SDK at present time.

Notice that you have to set-up the AudioHQ-speaker control panel in
order to handle the four speakers to operate correctly.

Dear Nicola,
a simple, trivial, non qualitative way to compare output beetween
platforms, could be a sample by sample subtraction. The resultant signal
should give the deviation error (in the case of identity, this should
give a sequence of zeroes). One can be the comparation both in float
samples and in integer samples.
Any other idea?

Unfortunately, this sometimes doesn't work so well due to subtle
differences in arithmetic between platforms. For example, Intel
processors store intermediate floating-point results in an 80-bit
format even when the results are 64-bit or 32-bit. Depending upon
how a compiler decides to store intermediate results, the outcome
can vary in the last bit. And in any case, the result can vary
slightly from that produced on a PPC or Alpha. Sometimes the
differences are entirely below rounding error, and 16-bit or even
float samples will be identical. In other cases (e.g. physical
modeling or high-index FM) error accumulation can make results
diverge over time and even fall out of phase with each other on
very long notes.

Sample comparison is worth a try, however. I'd suggest using the
standard deviation or variance of the sample differencess as a metric.
Just be prepared for those cases when it doesn't work even though
nothing is broken...

Subject: Re: [Csnd] : het_impo/expo

I am having a problem with the hetrodyne analysis import/export utilities.
I'm on an NT machine, and I have an analysis file that adsyn reads without
a problem. But if I het_expo the file then immediately het_impo it again,
(without opening the exported file before importing it again), adsyn can't
read it and I get the following error:

INIT error in instr1: illegal code -32768 encountered

I also noticed that the new file (i.e. the import of the export) is 5k
bigger than the original, whereas I'd expect it to be exactly the same.
(If I open up the two files in a text-editor they appear identical.) Has
anyone been using het_impo/expo on a Windows set-up and had more success
than me? The SGI versions worked fine when I tried them a few years ago.

thanks to anyone who can help.
best wishes,
Jon Wild

If Csound Is Great at making sounds, why do music?
Use Timidity++ and make a patch with Csound.
=20
csound -W -o sample.wav -d sample.orc sample.sco

In your orc, set it up normally.
In your sco file, set however many i# you want.
Compile.
Use convert to convert it to pat.
Use gravis.cfg and change you the instrument to your own.
Now, go to Timidity.
use a bat or makefile to compile test.mid
Mine is set up like this

run:

t %1.mid
 and that is all
set up your bat file to make it look similar to the one in the example.
This is what I do.
