It's being reported throughout the internet that the patents on mp3s
have expired (at least in the US) and that Fraunhofer is no longer
licensing it. Does this mean that Csound can start generating mp3s
now? (I know I can convert them myself but within my particular
project it would be very nice to be able to do it directly from Csound
like I do with ogg and flac.)

That would be a question to put to Eric de Castro Lopo, since we use his library for soundfile output.

So I guess it's just a matter of waiting to see if anyone wants to

I've filed issue #791 (https://github.com/csound/csound/issues/791) in
our own issue tracker that references the one from libsndfile.  We can
track the overall status of things there.
