Subject[=?UTF-8?Q?=D0=9E=D0=A2=5D_?=renaming my csound haskell lib
Probably you have heard of my haskell to csound lib. so I'm asking for a help
on this forum. After a while I've decided that csound-expression is a
very mouthful name and I think on renaming it.

I thought of to name it: Spell

the metaphor is that the musician/programmer is like a magician who cast spells to create music. it relates to the process of music making with my lib. Since very often all development happens in the interpreter with short wizz-buzz utterances which may look like spells.\

I'm no english speaker and though i like the idea I can not know all the subtle meanings of the word. So how do you think is it appropriate name for audio/music related library?

Thanks for tips
Anton

Hi Anton,

The main potential issue I can think of is that when I see the
world "spell" without any further context, I think first of
spelling, like spelling a word. I think probably that's because
the "spelling" sense of the word comes up more often than the
"magic spells" sense. I think if you called your library "Spells"
instead that would more readily bring the "magical" sense to
people's minds.

I'm a native English speaker from the U.S., to give a sense of
my background. It would be interesting to hear what other people
thought about this too, of course, since these things can be so
subjective.

Thanks so much for working on that library in any case! I'm
learning Haskell and hope to be skilled enough to try making
music with it before too long.

Best wishes,
Zoë

This is extremely boring but why not to tell with the name what the library does?
Like haskell2csound?
Best!

HI! Thanks for suggestions and tips.

I think that haskell2csound is as big as original one..  I guess I'll choose the Zoë's variant
i also thought on: svara and musilog (but it's a bit pompous).

I have a Haskell music library (Vivid) which, if I could rename it, I might not choose a less generic name (people have mentioned being confused by it having no indication of what it does). Might I recommend, similar to previous suggestions: CSpells (CSound + Spells)

Good luck - whatever you name it, it's a very impressive library!

One more question: but naming it that way (spells | cspells | csound-spells) it becomes hard to use the word as a synonym for "library"
since it's no longer "it" but "they". Should I write about it as if I writing in plural?

But maybe  that makes sense. I think that I'm going to use the name not as a  replacement for original one
but as the name for a framework or set of libraries. The Cs-expression is a core of the lib but I've got some others
and to make a complete picture I can name them as whole

"Cspells uses Csound to create music" is correct in this case. Since
it's a proper noun referring to a single library, it remains singular.
It's different from the everyday word "spells" because it's the name of
something.

This would actually still be true even if it referred to a set of
libraries; "Cspells is a set of Haskell libraries for working with
Csound" would still be the correct usage. This is because it's only
referring to a single set of libraries, even though there are multiple
libraries in the set.

Proper nouns are sometimes plural, but only when referring to multiple
objects that all take the same proper noun. For example, I have three
different friends named Katie. If they were all in the room with me, I
could say, "There are three Katies in the room."

I hope a brief discussion of English grammar isn't too off-topic for
this list. :p Let me know if this is confusing.

As a side note, I think Cspells has a nice ring to it.

Zoë

Thanks, Zoë and friends!

I think I'll keep it Cspells. to get the name right was important step since
I'm going to make a simple web site for it with examples and links to the projects related to the library.

I'd like to create something like the site for elm language (http://elm-lang.org/)
To make examples and write better guides for the novices.
Right now examples are too much outdated though the guide is good and relevant.

Also it would be good to augment the code listings with audio files.
So that users without haskell installed can follow what's going on.

Cheers,
Anton
