Really? Well I wrote a text as well I don't know! I was trying to understand why f3 in the csd file attached sounds like a kind of sine wave instead of sounding as a triangle (as I would like it to be) using gen10. It's also evident if I use a scope or graph widget that is not a triangle. So that was my text. Tarmo already answered to that and gave me a very good clue. When you got the whole e-mail it was effectively addressed just to you because I tried to send it, first of all, to the mailing list, and then I realised it didn’t work, so that’s why I sent just to you…sorry

I got the whole email and the csd. And it's addressed to csound@listserv.heanet.ie. I glanced at the code yesterday but could not spot any error. On 10/12/16 20:36, Tarmo Johannes

I can't remember now if you said someone had helped you already, but just incase... Essentially, the more harmonics you add, the closer the wave shape will get to a triangle, but to be truly triangular, you would need the harmonic range to extend to infinity. This is obviously not actually possible within a finite sized fable, and would produce aliasing unless an infinite sample rate was used On 11 Dec 2016 10:22 a.m., "Guillermo Senna" <gsenna@gmail.com> wrote:

The shape is not a triangle, though. That’s because he is using a sum of sines. For the triangle shape, he will need a sum of cosines. The spectrum amplitudes are correct. ======================== Prof. Victor Lazzarini Dean of Arts, Celtic Studies, and Philosophy, Maynooth University, Maynooth, Co Kildare, Ireland Tel: 00 353 7086936 Fax: 00 353 1 7086952 > On 11 Dec 2016, at 17:23, Peter Burgess |

I know the spectrum amplitudes are correct, but I assumed the number of harmonics was the issue. Changing to cosines will make it more triangular without extra harmonics then? Would the infinite set of sine partials not sum to a triangle shape? On 11 Dec 2016 5:34 p.m., "Victor Lazzarini" <Victor.Lazzarini@nuim.ie> wrote: The shape is not a triangle, though. I would have thought a sum of cosines would just produce the same wave with a different phase On 11 Dec 2016 6:53 p.m., "Peter Burgess" <pete.soundtechnician@gmail.com> wrote:

No, I've just realised why using cosines makes it look different, haha. I wasn't thinking straight. I've just been fiddling around, and you can get a fairly triangular waveform with only the first 2 partials! On 11 Dec 2016 6:58 p.m., "Peter Burgess" <pete.soundtechnician@gmail.com> wrote:

A sum of cosines produces a triangle shape, a sum of sines doesn’t. The spectrum amplitudes are the same, but not the phases. ======================== Prof. Victor Lazzarini Dean of Arts, Celtic Studies, and Philosophy, Maynooth University, Maynooth, Co Kildare, Ireland Tel: 00 353 7086936 Fax: 00 353 1 7086952 > On 11 Dec 2016, at 18:58, Peter Burgess |
