Well, it is a different book, rather than an update or new edition of the Csound book.
It is also complementary to it and covers the
new features of the system.

Greetings,
I saw the book listed on Amazon, it looks like it will be a great
addition to Csound documentation.
[op-ed]
It seems to me that most books on computer music fail in regards to the
"music" part. That is, I get a lot of technical detail regarding the
means and methods of the technology, but very little information about
how music is actually composed with those means & methods. Dodge's book
has some good analyses, but they're awfully brief compared to the rest
of the book. And that's pretty much how it is for most of the relevant
books I've read. A signal exception is Rick Taube's book on Common
Music, but that language does not itself provide any audio synthesis
technology (it relies on external sources such as CLM, Csound, or MIDI),
focusing completely on means and methods directly applicable to
composition. This new book on Csound appears to provide a corrective - I
see chapters devoted to particular composers and their works, which is
exactly what I want to read about. While I acknowledge the fundamental
importance of the technology and a need for its full description, at the
same time I see a need for more extensive description of works created
with it. (The OM Composers series is a good example of what I'd love to
see for Csound - collections of more or less technical articles on the
making of music with Csound.) Yes, studying the code of compositions can
be very profitable, but the code doesn't give you a sense of *why*
decisions were made or what alternatives presented themselves during the
creative process.

Best,

> [op-ed] > ..... > [/op-ed] I also agree. I'm a classically trained composer used to thinking only in terms of sheet music. I've started using Csound fairly recently because of what it can do better than MIDI for a project I'm working on. I'm not at all interested or knowledgeable about sound synthesis (though of course I recognize the value in those things!). So if this book is geared toward me or at least helps me understand how to use Csound better as a composer not interested in synthesis then it will be a godsend! I will check it out as soon as I can. We haven't got round to announcing it properly on this list, as it was only finally out last Friday. We'll write a post on it and also a news item for the site. Victor Lazzarini Dean of Arts, Celtic Studies, and Philosophy Maynooth University Ireland > On 20 Nov 2016, at 12:25, luis jure |

+1 I've mentioned it before, but I always liked Max Mathew's "The Technology of Computer Music" as it discussed examples using western-music notation and how to go about expressing it in Music V. (For example, see Fig. 32 and 33, pages 56 and 59: http://bitsavers.informatik.uni-stuttgart.de/pdf/bellLabs/The_Technology_of_Computer_Music_1969.pdf). I think we might use different strategies to express these ideas in Csound than to just use tables, as those examples do, but it would be nice to have a cookbook of musical examples and how to express them. The "new" Csound Book: Csound - A Sound and Music Computing System is incredible! amazing! brilliant! What an inspiration! (http://www.springer.com/us/book/9783319453682) Victor, Steven, John, Joachim, Oyvind, and Iain: Congratulations - and THANK YOU. You are awesome. I can't wait to see you all at Csound30 in Maynooth later this week so that I can thank you all personally for this wonderful gift... to me, to my students, and to future generations of Csounders everywhere. I purchased the PDF version the minute I read the announcement and was up all night reading... and LEARNING! Today, for a second time, and to remember our teacher - Jean-Claude Risset, I again read and reflected on the foreword that he wrote for you back in December of 2015. -dB On Mon, Nov 21, 2016 at 3:46 AM, fra <francescoarmandoporta@gmail.com> wrote: same to me! _____________________________________________ Dr. Richard Boulanger Professor of Electronic Production and Design Professional Writing and Music Technology Division Berklee College of Music ______________________________________________ President of Boulanger Labs - http://boulangerlabs.com Author & Editor of The Csound Book - http://mitpress.mit.edu/books/csound-book Author & Editor of The Audio Programming Book - http://mitpress.mit.edu/books/audio-programming-book ______________________________________________ about: http://www.boulangerlabs.com/about/richardboulanger/ about: http://www.csounds.com/community/developers/dr-richard-boulanger/ music: http://www.csounds.com/community/developers/dr-richard-boulanger/dr-richard-boulanger-music/ ______________________________________________ email: rboulanger@berklee.edu facebook: https://www.facebook.com/richard.boulanger.58 |
