(Sorry, pressed send accidentally)
Hi All,
Since SoundCloud removed their groups feature, we have a dead part of our site:
http://csound.github.io/listen.html
It seems like we should have some sort of group or playlist or
something that shares music for our community. Suggestions?

Fandalism? They also have a group feature. At Fandalism you can post
Youtube or SoundCloud clips.

Maybe consider creating a new SC account for Csound, and use that account to build up one or more playlists. Then we can just point to the new playlist on the page.

Certainly worth adding, but IMO we should keep an audio-only playlist as well.
Reviving this thread, one of the discussions we had at the conference
was maybe doing a Youtube playlist rather than SoundCloud. This would
give some options then to also include tutorial and demo videos. I
don't know if that should be an only option or just one of multiple.
I've got to urge that, before going the YouTube route,
y'all read closely their contributor's-agreement spec,
which strikes me as throwing our copyrights virtually
to the wolves.
Not to claim that I'm other than naïve on this subject.

Or we could make our own site, then we have complete control over
it.
There must be enough software people in our midst that could do
that. Nowadays there are so many options to create a good looking
site with not much effort.
We could decide on the technology (Django/Python, ASP .NET,
NodeJs, etc) and the hosting.

At this point in time, for what it's worth, my main channel for
listening to new music is YouTube.
I have WIndows Live Movie Maker and it shouldn't be hard for me to
make videos out of my Csound pieces. I will try it soon. I also have
pieces with a visual element that would go well this way.

If you belong to a performing rights organization such as ASCAP, you
might want to check this out:
https://www.ascap.com/help/royalties-and-payment/make-money-youtube.
What it says that members of rights organizations can get royalties
from YouTube views of their pieces AND register to get their share of
ad revenues from YouTube views of their pieces.
It's easy to join ASCAP as a writer, you just have to prove you have
written music that is available to the public. For me that was my
performance at the ICMC in Banff a while back. There are lots of other
ways. If you join as a writer you are automatically eligible to join
as a publisher.
I strongly suggest that anyone eligible join. Creators are at a
disadvantage and need to organize to fight for their rights.

No, it is global, more or less, via mutual agreements. But perhaps you
meant can foreigners join. Yes if they fill out appropriate US tax

Re: Csound Site - Listen Page
Hi,
I looked into this a bit, and the copyright holder can be a member of
his/her local/national copyrights organization. For example, for us in
Norway, this is TONO. The royalties collected from YouTube will
automatically be registered to your TONO account. But you *must* of
course register the work with your national copyrights
organization(ASCAP, TONO ...), and be careful to use the same title of
the work when publising on YouTube as the one that is registered.
And as I can read from Tono's website
(http://www.tono.no/faq-items/avregning-fra-youtube/), the royalties
comes from advertisement that YouTube "wraps around" your content. So
the content itself does not create royalties, just the advertisement
income. I guess this works ok in most cases, but I'm not sure how they
handle it for YouTube Red (ad-free) streams. Also, not sure if it
matters if the listener clicks "skip ad" or not?
But the basic system seems to be in place to take care of our rights there.

Re: Csound Site - Listen Page
This is not quite correct. YouTube and ASCAP and the content ID
services cooperate in distributing BOTH advertising revenues AND
regular old mechanical royalties.
ASCAP is not a copyright service, it is a performance rights
organization. The United States Copyright Office is the copyright
service. Of course for ASCAP to be able to perform its services, the
author, the publisher, and the performers must register their
copyrights with the Copyright Office.
I agree that YouTube has some sort of machinery in place to enforce
performance rights, at least when copyright holders complain, and to
collect and distribute royalties and ad revenues. However, another
whole issue is of course the paltry amount of the royalties. They
could be much higher without injuring social media, recording
companies, publishers, or audiences, in my opinion. On the other hand,
it is undoubtedly true that the low royalties lower the bar to entry
to the distribution system.
I think it's good that we're talking about these issues.

Mike

Re: Csound Site - Listen Page
Thanks for correcting my use of terms, it was not correct to use the
terms copyright organization. TONO is a performing rights organization
like ASCAP. So, I would expect the reyalties to be collected likewise
for TONO registered compositions as ASCAP registered compositions, and
equally for similar organizations covering other territories. Do you
have information that says it is handled differently with ASCAP than
with other performing rights organizations? The reason I ask is that
it would be quite impractical for a non-US composer to register with
ASCAP, and pay tax to the US for the royalties earned on YouTube
since the streams might have been listened to in any territory.
On a side note:
Talking of this, I'm not actually sure how this is handled tax-wise in
any case. If my music is streamed in the US, and I receive payment for
this in Norway, the actual transaction to the customer could be seens
as a US transaction(?). AFAIK this is something not fully defined
formally, and the streaming companies currently do their best to avoid
taxation in any case or any territory. Like also with "sharing"
services like AirBnb, where the tax regulations have been flaky, but
seem to be finding more formal definitions as this kind of business
flourish.

Re: Csound Site - Listen Page
After going through the steps to sign up for a bunch of stuff and to
begin uploading to YouTube, I must make some corrections and updates.
The earning of revenue for copyrighted music uploaded to YouTube is
complex! I have oversimplified.
First, if you upload to your own YouTube channel (very easy to do if
you have a video and a YouTube or Google account), YouTube will pay
you directly for ad revenues. The content ID services are oriented
more towards finding when your music has been used by some other
video.
It does not seem to be necessary to have a complete copyright
registration before registering with ASCAP. So you can register for
copyright and then register with ASCAP before the Copyright Office
finishes processing your request (it can take a while).
CDBaby does at least some of this content ID stuff also. They also put
your stuff on YouTube for you! I had no idea! My CDBaby album tracks
are already on YouTube! If you want to see them, just search for
"Michael Gogins" in YouTube. Make sure it's "Gogins" not "Goggins".
I went ahead and opted in for CDBaby to manage ad revenues for my
CDBaby albums, and to administer my ASCAP rights for those albums.
There was no fee but they will take a cut of my revenues.
I may also upload things directly to YouTube.
Too complex! IANAL! (I am not a lawyer!).
I may have more to say on this as I learn more in the coming months.
Regards,
Mike

Or we could make our own site, then we have complete control over
it.
There must be enough software people in our midst that could do
that. Nowadays there are so many options to create a good looking
site with not much effort.
We could decide on the technology (Django/Python, ASP .NET,
NodeJs, etc) and the hosting.
I've got
to urge that, before going the YouTube route,
y'all read closely their contributor's-agreement spec,
which strikes me as throwing our copyrights virtually
to the wolves.
Not to claim that I'm other than naïve on this subject.

A follow-up on this discussion. I have found an easy way to create MP4
videos that will upload to YouTube with high-resolution audio, an
automatically created spectrogram with title and composer and
copyright notice, and metadata. It is a Python script that calls sox
to create the spectrogram and ffmpeg to create the video and add the
metadata. A cut-down version of my script, which doesn't run as is but
could easily be fixed by filling in variables, is:
# -*- coding: utf-8 -*-
import datetime
import os
import os.path
import string
import sys
import time
sox_path = r'C:\Program_Files_x86\sox-14-4-2'
# YouTube accepts MOV, MP4 (MPEG4), AVI, WMV, FLV, 3GP, MPEGPS, WebM
# To use FFmpeg see https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=168433
and https://www.virag.si/2015/06/encoding-videos-for-youtube-with-ffmpeg/
# ffmpeg -loop 1 -framerate 2 -i input.png -i audio.ogg -c:v libx264
