[OT] Linux music distros

Subject[OT] Linux music distros
Hi all,

I am replacing my aging Linux laptop (the one I use for gigs) with a newer one. I may just put Debian on it like the current one, but I thought I'd ask: what music/media-oriented distros do people like these days and would recommend? A realtime kernel is not super important to me (and they seem less necessary these days anyway), not that it's a bad thing.

I can't fault KXStudio. Everything works well out of the box and it provides nice interfaces to ask your jack needs.

Good to know, Rory, thanks. That's one of the three I've been looking at, along with AV Linux and Planet CCRMA (though of course the latter is not actually a distro).

For what it is worth /i run OpenSuSE 13.2 on my laptop, 13.1 on my main
machine and, less for music, Debian Wheezy on the server.

A the university where i used to work we chose SuSE as our supported
distro and it was convenient to do the same at home.

OTOH I usually build stuff from source so am possible atypical

I am not really sure there is great deal to be gained from a specific music distro today, except
maybe the convenience of having a patched kernel ready if you need one. Building
and installing software in linux is so easy that I find that a vanilla distro (of the subflavour of
your liking) and then adding packages as you need is the best to have an uncluttered system.
Even patching and compiling your own kernels is not that much trouble. But then my judgement
might be clouded from builiding a distro from scratch using yocto. Anything is easy after that.

Thanks, John. I always build from source too. Use CentOS at work, and have used Fedora before. At home, I have Mint (based on Debian) on my main laptop, Debian on the old one I use for music -- busted keyboard (have to use external), broken headphone jack, one of the USB ports unusable. The new one on the way is reasonably-priced and ships with Linux, but a distro called Trisquel that I don't care about, so I plan to repave on receipt.

SubjectRe: [OT] Linux music distros
Ha, I'm sure that's true. I don't have the patience to do that myself. I may just go with Debian, which I'm already using. The only thing I've had to figure out with Debian was that I needed a newer kernel than they include by default in order to get ALSA mixer support for my Scarlett 18i8, and that was easy to rectify. I always build Csound from scratch anyway, and would probably not use much of the software that's typically bundled with one of those distros. On the other hand, it can be handy to get a good usable system configuration out of the box, with Jack, kernel tweaks etc. Anyway, if I try something and don't care for it, I'll just repave again.

I agree with Victor. I use regular old Ubuntu on two computers, configured for audio priority. No problems yet and installing packages is so easy.

Mike
