accuracy of tuning with the Karplus-Strong algorithms

Subjectaccuracy of tuning with the Karplus-Strong algorithms
I mentioned some years ago that because some/most of the waveguide/Karplus-Strong algorithms (repluck, wgpluck, etc.) seem to use integer sample-level delay lengths, you'll often find their tuning accuracy leaves much to be desired (for instance, really badly beating octaves, depending on how the frequency falls in your closest approximation of number of samples by sample-rate).

IIRC, 'pluck' was fine, but 'pluck' has rather limited timbral adjustment parameters. Other DSP libraries like 'pyo' seem to do this correctly, and use Lagrangian frequency interpolation on delay-lines to get arbitrary accuracy.

Are there any plans to get Lagrangian interpolation into the bulk of the string physical models? For my musical purposes, they are unfortunately unusable. How easy would it be to volunteer to improve these opcodes and code the pitch accuracy into them myself?

We don't even need lagrangian interpolation,  allpass filters will tune it fine. The trouble is that repluck and wgpluck do not use any fine tuning. Streson does, for instance.

I can write a pluck-like opcode with fine tuning if that's helpful, with pickup and pick position control.

Yes! Or, tweak repluck and/or wgpluck to have better tuning. :) Is that a lot of work?

is the integer nature of the *pluck* opcodes and other Karpus-Strong opcodes

Thanks for being willing to code this Victor. I'm interesting in learning the theory involved in it, as it pertains to actual C++ code. Thus, I'm interested in checking out the source code when you are done.

BTW, will it also have an 'aexcite' parameter? That would be the most excellent and flexible of the 'pluck'-type opcodes if it does.

I'm curious if this is still on the radar...the Karplus-Strong algorithms in Csound, besides 'pluck', have tuning issues due to integer-only sample-lengths of the buffer. Victor, I think you said it would be an easy fix (via allpass filters). If not, I'm curious (and motivated) to do it myself at some point, but I'd need more DSP coding chops, so I'd need a good working example of some code.

Hi Aaron,

yes, it is in my todo list. I found this CSD (attached) in my computer which as I far as I remember is correct and
will give you the idea. It has CsoundQT controls and responds to MIDI (mid file attached in the zip for fun).
Look at Steiglitz's DSP Primer for a good intro into the allpass tuning.

Hi Aaron,

yes, it is in my todo list. I found this CSD (attached) in my computer which as I far as I remember is correct and
will give you the idea. It has CsoundQT controls and responds to MIDI (mid file attached in the zip for fun).
Look at Steiglitz's DSP Primer for a good intro into the allpass tuning.

Victor, I think you said it would be an easy fix (via allpass filters). If not, I'm curious (and motivated) to do it myself at some point, but I'd need more DSP coding chops, so I'd need a good working example of some code.

Victor,

Should I just go with this attachment? Will it perform as well as a real
compiled opcode? Or should I try my hand at coding an opcode?

Cheers,

SubjectRe: accuracy of tuning with the Karplus-Strong algorithms
Opcodes written in C or C++ will perform about 3 times faster than
user-defined opcodes. You could also try writing an opcode in Lua
using the LuaJIT opcodes, these run as fast as C but do not need a
compiler, the LuaJIT opcodes include a runtime compiler. But actually
coding such opcodes is harder than C or C++.

I recommend using C++ with the OpcodeBase.hpp header file, such code
is easier to read than C and just as fast. All of the plugin opcodes
by me use OpcodeBase.hpp, take a look at Opcodes/stk/stkOpcodes.cpp
and doppler.cpp.

Mike

you can try it and see if it works for you,
if it doesn't you can try making it into an
opcode, I can give you a hand.

Incidentally, isn't there a string opcode
that is properly tuned in the stk lib opcodes?
