There _ought_ to be some clever arrangement of simple common stuff (balloons, papertowel rolls, dismantled joysticks?) that would work...?

[More re breath-control]

Yes, 'breathing across mic' and running the signal through Audacity there's a pretty wide range of intensities.

Doing this, one could take the notes from coded qwerty input -- and the velocities from that, wouldn't need a MIDI keyboard (but then, why not use it anyway...  :>}  )

I used a senistive air pressure sensor in a tube to be cotrolled by both inhaling and exhaling (negative pressure read) connected to arduino. One costed around 20eur. If you are interested, i can check out the tupe and model number.

Well, I'm more likely to make something electrical if I can do it with wire-nuts; otherwise would need to borrow a soldering iron etc from someone I know hereabouts.

Iain McCurdy -- I'm about to go back to your examples page for the one about amplitude-tracking...

and yes, I myself am interested in anyone's ideas/diagrams etc about this, and expect there are others at least thinking about it.

[Watching the meter on audacity, it looks like averaging amplitudes over a short interval might be a good idea... ]

These wouldn't be sensitive enough to be used as breath sensors, they need contact pressure.

Ah, something like this

http://iainmccurdy.org/diy/forcesensorlowprofile/

in a partially-closed tube?

and yes, I myself am interested in anyone's ideas/diagrams etc about this, and expect there are others at least thinking about it.

Hi,

I used a senistive air pressure sensor in a tube to be cotrolled by both inhaling and exhaling (negative pressure read) connected to arduino. One costed around 20eur. If you are interested, i can check out the tupe and model number.

You can make a cheap breath controller starting from an electret microphone capsule. If you would like a circuit diagram let me know I can sketch one up.

While we're talking re odd MIDI gadgetry (This was wonderful, by the way!!!) ---

Has anybody found a CHEAP way to constuct (acquire etc) a breath-controller? "Crude" & "imprecise" I could maybe learn to deal with -- but sensitive at least in a useful range?

There _ought_ to be some clever arrangement of simple common stuff (balloons, papertowel rolls, dismantled joysticks?) that would work...?

Okay... I guess not then.

Meanwhile, I'm picking up a fairly steady amplitude from a (bass recorder) mouthpiece, tube, &
an old thrift-store microphone with the crackly screen removed, all secured in place. (Similar, in principle, to what you had in mind, without the need to wire things together? Or significantly less functional?)

Anyway, I think this will work if I can reduce the sound from other sources... (And keep my drool from shorting out the mic parts.)
