What a shame. His 'Snowflakes are dancing' was a perfect match for Debussy and synthesizers... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wD-b6mU3SYQ Richard On 10/05/16 01:18, thorin kerr wrote:

I was very sad to read about his passing. I enjoy a number of his albums and found a lot of his synthesizer work inspiring. Thanks for posting this Thorin. steven On Mon, May 9, 2016 at 7:18 PM, thorin kerr |

Over the years I listened with pleasure to several of Tomita's albums that I bought. I particularly enjoyed _Canon of the Three Stars_ which under the title "Whistletrain" has a rendering of VIlla-Lobos' Bachianas Brasileiras No. 2: Toccata - Little Train Of The Caipiras. I felt that Tomita played his synthesizer lines with very good phrasing and brought out great feeling from the pieces. Oh, his phrasing and control were really extraordinary! I recall having a debate with a colleague (an experienced computer musician) who lamented that electronic instruments just can't quite capture the same richness, power and grandeur that a full orchestra can achieve. I played him some parts of Tomita's rendition of The Planets, and at first he simply refused to believe it was totally synthesised (It is of course). Tomita is a good lesson for composers who turn to electronic music. I still tend to forget about all the things a 'performer' does to music, but I'm quickly reminded when it comes out flat and lifeless, and not at all expressive the way Tomita could make it. What a sad loss. Such lovely synth work and the estetics of the sound design. His sound universe inspired me greatly. Rest in piece, Isao Tomita.
