Hi Folks,

Just wanted to point out that a Google search for Cabbage leads to the GitHub page (which is fine) but then that shows the home page as:

http://www.thecabbagefoundation.org

which doesn't seem to work.

Might be good to change this to:

http://cabbageaudio.com/

which I think is the correct page (?).

Also, I've got some questions/comments regarding Cabbage but the forum seems to be inactive. Just wanted to check that it's being monitored. Would I be better off posting here?

Cheers,

Chris

I was going to warn Rory about the same thing. I tried to install
Cabbage yesterday for the first time. I don't know if it is included in
the readme, but you can't build it with Csound 6.02 (in the Ubuntu
repositories) because of (at least) a function that didn't exist in
6.02. With 6.06 it was all good.

I think there is a bug when you open an example: the example sub-menu
doesn't expand again after that. I'll try to test it again later.

Also I must say I am impressed. Software looks amazing!

Thanks.

The latest version uses some new API functions that weren't in Csound6.02. Are you building using the buildCabbage script? If so you should have access to the examples. Otherwise simply copy the Examples folder into your build directory that contains the Cabbage binary. They'll give you access to the examples.

I did use the buildCabbage script. Altough I had to sed the Makefiles to change prefix and vst directory. Passing them as an argument to the script didn't work.

I can access the examples but once I opened one, the Examples sub-menu doesn't expand again so that I can choose to load another one. Is this the expected behavior?

Hi,
I had similar problems with my openSuse build - somehow it could not load any files from the file system (either plugins or soundfiles). Is there perhaps a hardcoded folder name somewhere? I cannot take to  debug it probably before tomorrow evening unfortunately ro report more.

I am running it from the CabbageBuild directory, which is why the first Example loads fine. Now, something weird happens: if I 'gdb ./Cabbage' it works fine and I can load as many examples as I like. But if I just do './Cabbage', the bug appears. gdb must be setting (or unsetting) some variable. Any ideas? How could I debug with the debugger? Maybe I should try to add a couple of couts to the code and see what it is doing.

I was going to warn Rory about the same thing. I tried to install Cabbage yesterday for the first time. I don't know if it is included in the readme, but you can't build it with Csound 6.02 (in the Ubuntu repositories) because of (at least) a function that didn't exist in 6.02. With 6.06 it was all good.

I think there is a bug when you open an example: the example sub-menu doesn't expand again after that. I'll try to test it again later.

Also I must say I am impressed. Software looks amazing!

Thanks.

    Just wanted to point out that a Google search for Cabbage leads to

    Might be good to change this to:

SubjectRe: [Csound] Cabbage Links (fwd)
I think I may have an idea what's wrong. When a csd file is loaded Cabbage sets the current directory to the one containing the .csd file. This encourages all supporting files for a .csd to be in the same folder as the csd. I have a feeling that File::getSpecialLocation(File::currentExecutableFile).getParentDirectory() return the current directory on your system rather than the directory of the executable as it should. On line 793 in CabbageStandaloneDialogue.cpp you'll see the following code:

    if(!File(examplesDir).exists())
    {
#if defined(LINUX) || defined(MACOSX)
        examplesDir = File::getSpecialLocation(File::currentExecutableFile).getParentDirectory().getFullPathName()+"/Examples";
#else
        examplesDir = File::getSpecialLocation(File::currentExecutableFile).getParentDirectory().getFullPathName()+"\\Examples";
#endif
    }

Just after that code add

cUtils::showMessage(examplesDir);

That will pop up a windows with the examples directory. Let me know if this changes after you've opened the first example.

Btw, you can always set the examples folder yourself in the preferences, but it should work with the default location.

Maybe I should try to add a couple of couts to the code and see what it is doing.

Also I forgot to say a couple of things:

* Every time I run Cabbage (gdb or not) it prints "Welcome to Cabbage,
problems with input file...".

* If I move the binary to a folder, copy a .csd file there and rename
the binary to the name of the file (minus the .csd extension), the csd
loads automatically but I can still see the Examples sub-menu as well as
the Edit-mode option. I read somewhere that if you rename the binary it
should filter the normal Host options. Is this a Windows thing or should
it also work in Linux?

* In the buildCabbage script, if you pass the configure options as
arguments then they're not reflected in the build. Should they 1) be set
to the left of the binary name (as variables), 2) passed using bash
(like $@) or 3) somehow the make command takes the arguments from the
script that invoked it?

You were right. After I loaded the FunAndGames example, if I click the
Options menu the path now says
"../Linux/CabbageBuild/Examples/FunAndGames/Examples".

Now if I open Cabbage from the Xfce menu, (I just saw that there was a
"cabbage.desktop"), the path stays correct.

SubjectRe: [Csound] Cabbage Links (fwd)
* Every time I run Cabbage (gdb or not) it prints "Welcome to Cabbage, problems with input file...".

That's Ok. Seen as there was no input file passed, Cabbage can't load one.

* If I move the binary to a folder, copy a .csd file there and rename the binary to the name of the file (minus the .csd extension), the csd loads automatically but I can still see the Examples sub-menu as well as the Edit-mode option. I read somewhere that if you rename the binary it should filter the normal Host options. Is this a Windows thing or should it also work in Linux?

This is a bug, it should work this way. I'll fix that tomorrow.

* In the buildCabbage script, if you pass the configure options as arguments then they're not reflected in the build. Should they 1) be set to the left of the binary name (as variables), 2) passed using bash (like $@) or 3) somehow the make command takes the arguments from the script that invoked it?

3 is more like what is happening. Just make sure you pass the paths in the correct order.

Ok. Strange. But good to know it works Ok from the Xfce menu. I'll need to look into that. So you are using Xubuntu, or plain old Ubuntu with an Xfce desktop?

You were right. After I loaded the FunAndGames example, if I click the Options menu the path now says "../Linux/CabbageBuild/Examples/FunAndGames/Examples".

Now if I open Cabbage from the Xfce menu, (I just saw that there was a "cabbage.desktop"), the path stays correct.

On line 793 in CabbageStandaloneDialogue.cpp you'll see the following code:

    if(!File(examplesDir).exists())
    {
#if defined(LINUX) || defined(MACOSX)
        examplesDir = File::getSpecialLocation(File::currentExecutableFile).getParentDirectory().getFullPathName()+"/Examples";
#else
        examplesDir = File::getSpecialLocation(File::currentExecutableFile).getParentDirectory().getFullPathName()+"\\Examples";
#endif
    }

Just after that code add

cUtils::showMessage(examplesDir);

That will pop up a windows with the examples directory. Let me know if this changes after you've opened the first example.

Btw, you can always set the examples folder yourself in the preferences, but it should work with the default location.

I tried passing them as in the example in the readme (adjusting the VST
folder to my needs). No luck. I can see when the compiler compiles each
file that the -I for the VST dir. is not what I've passed as an argument
to buildCabbage. I thought what you'd want is 1). In the makefiles I see
the conditional variable assignment operator, which the manual of make
says defines a variable if it hasn't been defined yet. But by doing
./buildCabbage foo=bar, I don't think you are setting the variable.
Aren't you, instead, passing foo=bar as an argument to the bash script
(a.k.a $1). Am I right?

Hey, is the opcodes.txt file necessary? It is not copied to the
CabbageBuild dir. after you build Cabbage. But when I load a .csd, I see
that in the terminal it says ..Builds/Linux/CabbageBuild/opcodes.txt.
Which, again, as I said, doesn't exist there.

Cheers.

P.S. I am going through the C++ Primer right now. When I finish all the
exercises maybe I could fork your repo and start giving you a hand if
you like. I've been wanting to learn JUCE since I heard about it.

That warning about problem with input files is nothing to worry about. You can ignore it. I've updated the readme and the buildCabbage file so that this process should make more sense. You're not supposed to run it with ./buildCabbage foo=bar, it's not a make file. It's merely a simple script that invokes the underlying makefiles. The latest buildCabbage script now copies the opcodes.txt file to the correct location. And the issue of the host opening in 'standalone' mode when renamed to that of a file is resolved.

Fork away. I'm happy to look over pull requests.

Hi,

I can confirm now that loading soundfiles and Cabbage studio xml files from the filesystem works now (openSuse 13.2).

Thanks!

SubjectRe: [Csound] Cabbage Links (fwd)
I can confirm Standalone now works! I am still having that issue with
the disabled Example sub-menu after I load the first one. I found out
that the .desktop file works because it uses the full path to the
binary. But anyway, what the readme advises is fine.

You know, if you download the VST3 SDK from Steinberg's website you get
a folder called "VST3 SDK". That space is a problem with bash. To make
'make' happy I had to do single-quotes, and of course use a backslash
for the make command (e.g. 'VST3\ SDK'). Maybe it could be better to use
single-quotes in the Readme and add something like: Or if you've
downloaded the VST3 SDK you should do something like 'foo/bar/VST3\
SDK'. This might sound like minutiae, but I'd like to think in the
not-so-experienced users too. If not, I think you should at least
doube-quote the "$1", "$2", "$3" in the script.

Hey, I still can't access the cabbagefoundation.org. Didn't you changed
that in the Readme? I see that thecabbagefoundation.org is also
mentioned in ./Source/Standalone/CabbageStandaloneDialog.cpp 3 times.

(Sorry to be so annoying, really.)

I wanted to ask you a couple of things:
* I tried to "Add to repository" some elements. It asked me for a name
and to hit escape. But Homegrown is disabled when I right-click. Can it
also be a path thing?
* It there a way to move the elements in the GUI editor, with the mouse,
while in Edit-mode, inside a groupbox? I can only move the groupbox
itself. It could be a cool feature to have.

Thank you very much Rory.

Unfortunately click-and-drag doesn't work over here for elements inside a groupbox. It always selects the groupbox itself. Also, I'm having a weird behavior when moving groupboxes. It could be a bug. I'm running out of time right now, but I'll see if I can reproduce it later and debug the first thing I mentioned.

So that's why I think it's probably best to talk about Cabbage there. I'll post something over there in a minute.

Thanks Guillermo for this. You can find the new forum at forum.cabbageaudio.com
I'll update the links and readme. You should be able to move around widgets contained within a groupbox. Simply click and drag? It works fine on others systems. I'll have to check again on Linux. For what it's worth this feedback is priceless. Anything that can make things easier for the newbie is always welcome!

I can confirm Standalone now works! I am still having that issue with the disabled Example sub-menu after I load the first one. I found out that the .desktop file works because it uses the full path to the binary. But anyway, what the readme advises is fine.

You know, if you download the VST3 SDK from Steinberg's website you get a folder called "VST3 SDK". That space is a problem with bash. To make 'make' happy I had to do single-quotes, and of course use a backslash for the make command (e.g. 'VST3\ SDK'). Maybe it could be better to use single-quotes in the Readme and add something like: Or if you've downloaded the VST3 SDK you should do something like 'foo/bar/VST3\ SDK'. This might sound like minutiae, but I'd like to think in the not-so-experienced users too. If not, I think you should at least doube-quote the "$1", "$2", "$3" in the script.

Hey, I still can't access the cabbagefoundation.org. Didn't you changed that in the Readme? I see that thecabbagefoundation.org is also mentioned in ./Source/Standalone/CabbageStandaloneDialog.cpp 3 times.

(Sorry to be so annoying, really.)

I wanted to ask you a couple of things:
* I tried to "Add to repository" some elements. It asked me for a name and to hit escape. But Homegrown is disabled when I right-click. Can it also be a path thing?
* It there a way to move the elements in the GUI editor, with the mouse, while in Edit-mode, inside a groupbox? I can only move the groupbox itself. It could be a cool feature to have.

Thank you very much Rory.

Great. I've updated the readme with a note about this.
