to exterminate extra midi thru ports

Somehow in the course of promiscuous audio program tryouts & finally allowing postponed software updates I've suddenly ended up with a horde of unwanted midi thru ports which are clogging up my aconnectgui interface & rendering it unworkable...

I'm running on ubuntu 14...
Ideas re what's doing it or what to do about it, please?!

Okay, it's more or less fixed.
I've removed the offending programs (maybe), suffered an upgrade, & still have the extra ports showing on aconnectgui.
amidi -l doesn't show them.

To connect to the virtual ports I'm been using for csound & pd:
1) start pd, audio to other card. 2) sudo modprobe snd-vermidi & then
3) aconnectgui can still reach the first of the new virtual-midi ports at the very bottom of the display.
(Arrgh!)

(I should have expected those midi-thru ports to be directly accessible via csound, but get):

"ALSA: error opening MIDI input device: 'hw:14,0' "

I found this on a forum:
sudo rmmod snd_seq_dummy

That worked. I needed to restart aconnectgui. (Followed it up with 'sudo modprobe snd-virmidi' to get back those ports; don't know if that was needed or not.)
