I have posted to SourceForge (http://sourceforge.net/projects/csound/files/csound6/Csound6.05/Setup_Csound6_6.05.1beta.exe/download. this is a large download) a beta version of CsoundQt for Windows that implements the <CsHtml5> element of the CSD file. This permits users to incorporate JavaScript, HTML user interfaces with interactive widgets, style sheets, graphics created in code either by drawing on the HTML canvas or with full three-dimensional WebGL, and other features.

This is a beta release. Known issues:

(1) CsoundQt always produces a crash on exit. I am aware of the cause and am working on a solution.

(2) There may be other crashes when re-running a piece or when switching to another piece with <CsHtml5>.

However, the <CsHtml5> features do work. There are two examples in the Csound examples/html directory, one to show off WebGL driving Csound, and the other to show off styled HTML widgets as well as score generation and graphics generation from a JavaScript Lindenmayer system. The user must set each widget, click on the store button, and click on the restore button before this piece will produce sound.

The JavaScript libraries required by these CSDs also are included in the installer.

Please get back to me with any problems, bugs, questions, or suggestions. I will probably fix the crash on exit in the next few days, and replace the download.

I must have missed something: is there a specification for this new
 section somewhere? This sounds like a really exciting
development, and I'd like to know more about how it's supposed to
work.

There isn't much documentation yet (I am working on some). You can look at the user guide for the Csound for Android app. Briefly, the <CsHmtl5> element is an optional section of the CSD file. It can contain any valid HTML code. When JavaScript embedded in this HTML code executes, there is a "csound" object automatically available that represents the running instance of Csound. The following methods on this csound object can be called from JavaScript:

* int getVersion ()
 * int compileCsd (String pathname)
 * void compileOrc (String orchestracode)
 * double evalCode (String orchestracode)
 * void readScore (String scorelines)
 * void setControlChannel (String channelName, double value)
 * double getControlChannel (String channelName)
 * void message (String text)
 * int getSr ()
 * int getKsmps ()
 * int getNchnls ()
 * int isPlaying ()

Admittedly, this is not a whole lot of the Csound API, but it is certainly enough to enable JavaScript in the HTML to interact with Csound. So you can have HTML widgets that control Csound via channels, or generate scores in JavaScript and play them with Csound.

The plus side here is that the capabilities of the browser are stupendous. You can do 3 dimensional animated graphics with relative ease, including shaders, tweening, etc. You can apply style sheets to widgets. JavaScript itself is a pretty good functional programming language, and runs pretty fast in the browser. There are a lot of open source JavaScript libraries that you can get and that you can now use with Csound.

Regards,
Mike

Right now, <html> goes inside <CsHtml5>. But I suppose I could do as you suggest. In fact, I don't know why I didn't think of that myself. Can you think of any down sides?

Thanks!

This is a big thing - to move towards a possibly universal way to create UI
withing csd.

I hope I can pull the sources and try to build on Linux on coming days.

Hi,

We might want to support multiple tags to separate interfaces for different devices. e.g.:

<html device="phone">
</html>
<html device="tablet">
</html>
<html device="desktop" default="true">
</html>
<html device="hiresdesktop">
</html>

But that should be possible with an html tag anyway, right?

I don't see this superseding the current GUI as there is no interface builder, but when there is, I am happy to get rid of the old widget format.

Cheers,
Andrés

It now takes <html>. <CsHtml5> still works if it encloses a standard <html> element. Thanks for the suggestion.

Mike

AttachmentsNone  None
Victor is correct. But Cabbage could be modified with the browser engine, as CsoundQt has been modified.

This is not a lightweight piece of code. Essentially you are stuffing all of Google's Chromium Web browser into your program. To include the browser, there are about a dozen fairly complicated C++ classes that have to be compiled and fitted into the project. Then too, the actual browser (the HTML window, that is) might be running in a separate process and communicates with your actual program over a hidden IPC channel. (Actually right now this is just a separate thread, but this may be causing problems and may have to be changed).

The plus side, of course, is the stupendous capabilities of Chromium. Also implementing the native functions for the JavaScript functions is quite straightforward.

In the long run, say five years or more, or maybe less, I think something like Emscripten is the way to go. At this point the Web browsers are doing almost everything that both the operating system and a decent game engine are doing. And all of this is available from JavaScript. And because of the security sandboxing, only JavaScript can be COUNTED ON to run in a regular browser. But what I am saying is that there is now real competition between the "browser platform" and the various operating system platforms. In the long run, the simplest solution is for the browser to grow and take over most of the functionality of the operating systems, which will become more like simple kernels and hardware abstraction layers. But that's if people are rational.

I would be interested if Rory Walsh wants to add HTML capabilities to Cabbage. If he does, he can use most of the code that I developed for CsoundQt out of the box.

Mike

I have tried something similar on Mac OS, just using a Webkit WebView I made a gui using HTML and did communication back to Csound using web sockets (I had to write an opcode for that). In this way (at least in my dreams) you could write cross platform apps and even AU VST plugins that use Webviews, using Csound and HTML. Would make development a good bit easier as you are pretty much taking any native coding out of the picture.

In my article for the next Csound journal I'll be showing how to make web GUI's with jQuery UI elements, websockets and Javascript running from a Python Flask web server (for instance on the Raspberry Pi). This server is also the interface to Csound via the Python API.

You wrote an opcode to read websockets? Fantastic! Could it be integrated into Csound source code?
Thanks,
Tarmo

I have tried something similar on Mac OS, just using a Webkit WebView I made a gui using HTML and did communication back to Csound using web sockets (I had to write an opcode for that). In this way (at least in my dreams) you could write cross platform apps and even AU VST plugins that use Webviews, using Csound and HTML. Would make development a good bit easier as you are pretty much taking any native coding out of the picture.

Mike

Yes, it’s a work in progress though, at the moment it just reads in single variables at krate. Whats left is to have bi-directional communication and to be able to read/write krate/arate arrays.
In order to write to web sockets from Csound, the opcode would have to first poll the web socket to see if it is available to write, then the data is pulled to the web socket using a callback, (I’m using libwebsockets), so this would need to be multithreaded it seems. I would guess this would take a bit of care to write so as to not block the audio thread.

Or you try the installer on windows.

SubjectRe: CsoundQt now has
you are right, i forgot to mention CONFIG+=html5.

doing that, it complains about:
WARNING: Failure to find: src/qcefwebview.cpp
WARNING: Failure to find: src/html5guidisplay.h
WARNING: Failure to find: src/cefclient_qt.h
WARNING: Failure to find: src/client_handler_qt.h
WARNING: Failure to find: src/qcefwebview.h

is this related to what you mentioned in qcs.pro:
# For HTML5, download the Chromium Embedded Framework from:
# https://bitbucket.org/chromiumembedded/cef. Use the pre-built 32 bit
binaries
# from:
http://www.magpcss.net/cef_downloads/index.php?query=label%3A~Deprecated+label%3ACEF3+label%3Abinary#list.

do i have to install it on linux, too?

thanks -

SubjectRe: CsoundQt now has
AttachmentsNone  None

Yes. It is prebuilt. Install the CEF BINARIES and do not even try to build them.

Best,
Mike

you are right, i forgot to mention CONFIG+=html5.

doing that, it complains about:
WARNING: Failure to find: src/qcefwebview.cpp
WARNING: Failure to find: src/html5guidisplay.h
WARNING: Failure to find: src/cefclient_qt.h
WARNING: Failure to find: src/client_handler_qt.h
WARNING: Failure to find: src/qcefwebview.h

is this related to what you mentioned in qcs.pro:
# For HTML5, download the Chromium Embedded Framework from:
# https://bitbucket.org/chromiumembedded/cef. Use the pre-built 32 bit
binaries
# from:
http://www.magpcss.net/cef_downloads/index.php?query=label%3A~Deprecated+label%3ACEF3+label%3Abinary#list.

do i have to install it on linux, too?
