Hi! I am very thrilled to announce that Eduardo Mogouillansky jumped to the boat of developing CsoundQt and has done an incredible work to bring in a vast number of improvements and fixes - both for look and functionality. Greatest thanks, Eduardo! The binaries and source code are up on: - also including experimental AppImage package for (any) Linux Release notes: If you build from source, please check out the branch newlook - after your feedback it will be merged to develop and then to master hopefully soon. The most remarkable changes are: - new splash screen and icon - added Breeze icon theme (choose from Configure -> General -> Selected theme) - better and cleaner organization of the configuration tabs - configurable toolbar icon size - color themes for editor window (Configure-> Editor -> Colour Theme) - Test audio setup from Configure -> Run (requires Csound 6.14) - Control channel numbers and sample rate from Configuration - Added new Table plot widget - new look and functionality to knob (option to use the old one, as well) and much more. If you ever use CsoundQt, please do take time to download, test and report back - there has been a lot of changes and user feedback is necessary to make the software as solid as possible. Tanks! tarmo has gone through substantial changes both for |

Hello, the new stuff is awesome! Check the highlights for 'else'. It is blue, where i guess orange was the intention.
Great work!

Hi, No, this does not go to Appveyor. Usually CsoundQt is added to the Csound package on Csound release. But you can download and use it separately. For any case, keep the official one, you can run CsoundQt.app from any directory. tarmo Kontakt Marc Demers (<caecos@hotmail.ca>) kirjutas kuupäeval N, 2. aprill 2020 kell 15:20:

Looks great! I only had time for cursory look. But I had to use Task Manager (on Windows 10 1909) to close the application -- I first clicked the close button in the outer frame, which made the app change back to its original size (I had maximized it) and then the app became unresponsive. - Dave On Thu, Apr 2, 2020 at 6:38 AM Tarmo Johannes <trmjhnns@gmail.com> wrote:

super excited about all these improvements - especially to the displays! first test (on Catalina 10.15.4 - MacBook Pro) - when I selected the virtual keyboard, the toolbar - all the tools/icons (run, render, record, configure, etc.) - turned black and I could not read any of them. I had to restart. _____________________________________________ Dr. Richard Boulanger Professor of Electronic Production and Design Professional Writing and Music Technology Division Berklee College of Music ______________________________________________ OFFICE: 1126 Boylston St., Suite 201 (EPD), Suite 208 (Boulanger) ______________________________________________ President of Boulanger Labs - http://boulangerlabs.com Author & Editor of The Csound Book - http://mitpress.mit.edu/books/csound-book Author & Editor of The Audio Programming Book - http://mitpress.mit.edu/books/audio-programming-book ______________________________________________ about: http://www.boulangerlabs.com/#about about: http://www.csounds.com/community/developers/dr-richard-boulanger/ music: http://www.csounds.com/community/developers/dr-richard-boulanger/dr-richard-boulanger-music/ ______________________________________________ email: rboulanger@berklee.edu facebook: https://www.facebook.com/richard.boulanger.58 On Thu, Apr 2, 2020 at 6:38 AM Tarmo Johannes <trmjhnns@gmail.com> wrote:

I am running the widget examples from the CsoundQt "examples" menu Also note that the tools go dark/black when running on MacOS 10.15 Mojave as well - it is not a Catalina issue. _____________________________________________ Dr. Richard Boulanger Professor of Electronic Production and Design Professional Writing and Music Technology Division Berklee College of Music ______________________________________________ OFFICE: 1126 Boylston St., Suite 201 (EPD), Suite 208 (Boulanger) ______________________________________________ President of Boulanger Labs - http://boulangerlabs.com Author & Editor of The Csound Book - http://mitpress.mit.edu/books/csound-book Author & Editor of The Audio Programming Book - http://mitpress.mit.edu/books/audio-programming-book ______________________________________________ about: http://www.boulangerlabs.com/#about about: http://www.csounds.com/community/developers/dr-richard-boulanger/ music: http://www.csounds.com/community/developers/dr-richard-boulanger/dr-richard-boulanger-music/ ______________________________________________ email: rboulanger@berklee.edu facebook: https://www.facebook.com/richard.boulanger.58 On Thu, Apr 2, 2020 at 6:07 PM Eduardo Moguillansky <eduardo.moguillansky@gmail.com> wrote:

I will try this later today. I did notice another bug - maybe you have fixed it already... When I select any of the examples from the Floss Manual, the .csd files are loaded into the editor, but it will not "run" them - the console says: Could not find <CsoundSynthesizer> tag in CSD file. Reading CSD failed (No such file or directory)... stopping _____________________________________________ Dr. Richard Boulanger Professor of Electronic Production and Design Professional Writing and Music Technology Division Berklee College of Music ______________________________________________ OFFICE: 1126 Boylston St., Suite 201 (EPD), Suite 208 (Boulanger) ______________________________________________ President of Boulanger Labs - http://boulangerlabs.com Author & Editor of The Csound Book - http://mitpress.mit.edu/books/csound-book Author & Editor of The Audio Programming Book - http://mitpress.mit.edu/books/audio-programming-book ______________________________________________ about: http://www.boulangerlabs.com/#about about: http://www.csounds.com/community/developers/dr-richard-boulanger/ music: http://www.csounds.com/community/developers/dr-richard-boulanger/dr-richard-boulanger-music/ ______________________________________________ email: rboulanger@berklee.edu facebook: https://www.facebook.com/richard.boulanger.58 On Fri, Apr 3, 2020 at 4:09 AM Eduardo Moguillansky <eduardo.moguillansky@gmail.com> wrote:

Wonderful - Floss Manual examples now "run" on macOS Mojave 10.14.6 - Display Widget Examples now "display" on macOS Mojave 10.14.6 Testing with Catalina in a few minutes, but this RC is awesome - and yes, as you reported, when one selects the Virtual MIDI keyboard icon, the toolbar still turns black I must say, that in class now and then, I often pop open that keyboard to play something or show something. - it is pretty useful to have one around (built in) - a built-in "controller bank with buttons" would be useful too. _____________________________________________ Dr. Richard Boulanger Professor of Electronic Production and Design Professional Writing and Music Technology Division Berklee College of Music ______________________________________________ OFFICE: 1126 Boylston St., Suite 201 (EPD), Suite 208 (Boulanger) ______________________________________________ President of Boulanger Labs - http://boulangerlabs.com Author & Editor of The Csound Book - http://mitpress.mit.edu/books/csound-book Author & Editor of The Audio Programming Book - http://mitpress.mit.edu/books/audio-programming-book ______________________________________________ about: http://www.boulangerlabs.com/#about about: http://www.csounds.com/community/developers/dr-richard-boulanger/ music: http://www.csounds.com/community/developers/dr-richard-boulanger/dr-richard-boulanger-music/ ______________________________________________ email: rboulanger@berklee.edu facebook: https://www.facebook.com/richard.boulanger.58 On Fri, Apr 3, 2020 at 2:22 PM Eduardo Moguillansky <eduardo.moguillansky@gmail.com> wrote:

For what it's worth, Iain, Tarmo, or ??? - could you substitute a more exciting drum loop into the examples (especially the awesome McCurdy examples) - the "808loop.wav" is pretty "sleepy" and doesn't do much to make the case for how cool some of these models and effects might be. I have shared a link to an OpenSource folder of DrumLoops given to me by my friend and student BT - you might want to choose from and include some of these in the distribution. -dB _____________________________________________ Dr. Richard Boulanger Professor of Electronic Production and Design Professional Writing and Music Technology Division Berklee College of Music ______________________________________________ OFFICE: 1126 Boylston St., Suite 201 (EPD), Suite 208 (Boulanger) ______________________________________________ President of Boulanger Labs - http://boulangerlabs.com Author & Editor of The Csound Book - http://mitpress.mit.edu/books/csound-book Author & Editor of The Audio Programming Book - http://mitpress.mit.edu/books/audio-programming-book ______________________________________________ about: http://www.boulangerlabs.com/#about about: http://www.csounds.com/community/developers/dr-richard-boulanger/ music: http://www.csounds.com/community/developers/dr-richard-boulanger/dr-richard-boulanger-music/ ______________________________________________ email: rboulanger@berklee.edu facebook: https://www.facebook.com/richard.boulanger.58 On Fri, Apr 3, 2020 at 5:39 PM Dr. Richard Boulanger <rboulanger@berklee.edu> wrote:

Another few little things - in the demos and all over. MIDI is an acronym - and should always be spelled with ALL CAPS (in the FLOSS Manual too), but in our list of examples in CsoundQt as well) - 02C02_Midi... FLOSS Manual QuickStart Example Crashes CsoundQt - I think that this is because it asks for the virtual keyboard in the csOptions Also - and maybe more important - setting -t0 or --simple-sorted-score in csOptions does nothing and does not print out a score.srt anywhere BUT... if you put these commands in the Additional Command Line text box under the CsoundQt Configure Options - it does print out a score.srt Why is csOptions ignoring this command line flag? _____________________________________________ Dr. Richard Boulanger Professor of Electronic Production and Design Professional Writing and Music Technology Division Berklee College of Music ______________________________________________ OFFICE: 1126 Boylston St., Suite 201 (EPD), Suite 208 (Boulanger) ______________________________________________ President of Boulanger Labs - http://boulangerlabs.com Author & Editor of The Csound Book - http://mitpress.mit.edu/books/csound-book Author & Editor of The Audio Programming Book - http://mitpress.mit.edu/books/audio-programming-book ______________________________________________ about: http://www.boulangerlabs.com/#about about: http://www.csounds.com/community/developers/dr-richard-boulanger/ music: http://www.csounds.com/community/developers/dr-richard-boulanger/dr-richard-boulanger-music/ ______________________________________________ email: rboulanger@berklee.edu facebook: https://www.facebook.com/richard.boulanger.58 On Fri, Apr 3, 2020 at 5:42 PM Dr. Richard Boulanger <rboulanger@berklee.edu> wrote:

I'm puzzled - the fltk site indicates it was updated to support 10.13 and 10.14 (Mojave, which I am still on) last year; and a quick check of "FilterResponse" (by John Fitch for the book) as built sometime in 2015 opens and runs, as do various fltk demo programs. Quoting V. Lazzarini: " Unfortunately, the FLTK library doesn’t play well with the MacOS objective-c graphics. In this system, FLTK is used with no threads, which might explain the behaviour, as every time you touch the interface, the audio thread is interrupted causing the clicks or the sound to stop. Threads in FLTK cause Csound to crash on MacOS so that’s why they are not used. Maybe it’s possible to make them work, but I do not think any of us core developers will be spending time trying to hack FLTK to behave. If anyone wants to do this, they’re welcome. Hi, I’m very glad to see such big improvements! And the concern about the retirement of CsoundQt seems to have disappeared now. In previous versions, it was very annoying that a patch failed to load without the external sound card connected, because of wrong number of channels. This is now resolved, with the possibility to select the number of channels in the configuration. And the Test Audio/Midi is so useful! There are also big improvements concerning the GUI. And I am glad that this strange bug in Knob is no longer there: the jump between the minimum and the maximum value made it unusable in concert. There are stil certain things that need to be improved in the GUI, I don’t know how easy it is to achieve that: About the Controller widget: I’m very glad that I can get rid of this awful black background! However, there is still something that is missing : to change the border color. F.e. by using meters, it is not a good idea that the border of the « overflow » square is red. About the Button widget: How Joachim already told, it would be very nice to have the possibility to change the colors of the buttons. There is also something that annoys me : in event mode, the event is sent when the button is released. It should send the event when the button is pressed. To use pictures in buttons is a nice idea, but in the moment it is not working correctly. It would also be very useful to have radio buttons and the possibility to change the color of the sliders. Currently buttons and sliders use native widgets, meaning that in each platform the implementation is slightly different. For example, in macOS changing the background of the buttons results in the widget switching to a fallback mode which looks foreign, resembling a gui from the 80s. For the next release there is a plan to implement flat versions of the button and slider widgets, similar to what happened with the knob widget. This would give as control over all these parameters and would, as a side effect, ensure that a gui created in one platform looks exactly the same in another platform. > > There is also something that annoys me : in event mode, the event is sent > when the button is released. This got broken when adding a varying font-size to the button widget. It should be easy to fix. > > It would also be very useful to have radio buttons and the possibility to > change the color of the sliders. Regarding sliders, as I said before, native sliders can't change colors easily, but a non-native implementation can solve this. Radio buttons could be nice but they share the same functionality with menu widgets, so I don't see them as a priority. Glad to see that some work is being done on that front (Csound-QT). Unfortunately for me, I gave up on it a while back, as it's never seemed to be stable on any of my setups (Linux or MacOS) with multiple crashes, hangs, dropouts, and xrun situations. But glad to hear some improvements are being made and it is working better for other folks. I'm curious, is it still being distributed by default with Csound? I would like to see a package of Csound that was lighter-weight, and had just the core text-interface stuff, and thus allowing GUIs to be modular add-ons. Also, a pity that so much of Iain McCurdy's work with FLTK is not usable by so many due to the nature of FLTK threading on certain systems. I know some (all?) of that work has been ported to QT ath this point. Would also be interesting to see it be used in a browser GUI...as in a server that feeds OSC signals to Csound via widget browser front-ends... A grid of 10x10 could not be done via radio buttons. But a matrix-like widget could be a possibility for a future release. CsoundQt is an incredible, powerful, versatile, important and intuitive front-end for Csound (especially on the Mac). I and my students are eternally grateful that it is distributed with Csound and that the developers and maintainers such as Tarmo and now Eduardo continues to make it better and better. The examples are awesome, especially the complete set by Iain McCurdy, whose Qt front-ends make the whole system usable out of the box - without any deep or prior knowledge of Csound. This CsoundQt IDE, this system, and these diverse and powerful included instrument models, interfaces, interface builder and musical collections help to showcase the power and beauty of Csound - from the first moment. With gratitude and appreciation, I want to thank Tarmo, Eduardo and everyone who continues to work on and support the distribution of this essential teaching and production gateway. CsoundQt has helped to open the door for so many into the beautiful world of Csound... and... it runs on the RaspberryPi too!
